Sun Microsystems of Canada will be responsible for managing the IT infrastructure supporting the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) in Vancouver, Canada. The assignment entails connecting 15 networked venues and three datacenters, running multiple business applications and an integration test lab, and keeping 10,000 media outlets up to date with over 100 TB of data. This technology infrastructure will handle daily operations as well as share real-time data with billions worldwide.
CLUMEQ is a supercomputing consortium of universities in the province of Quebec, Canada. It includes McGill University, Universite Laval, and all nine components of the Universite du Quebec network. CLUMEQ supports scientific research in disciplines such as climate and ecosystems modeling, high energy particle physics, cosmology, nanomaterials, supramolecular modeling, bioinformatics, biophotonics, fluid dynamics, data mining and intelligent systems. Sun is providing the technology for this HPC implementation.
Berlin-based myToys.de is a retail company that sells merchandise for children and their families. Distributing its goods online, in stores, and through a mail-order catalog, the company initially relied on Linux for most of its computing systems. In time, the IT environment at myToys.de became heterogeneous and support became an issue. To increase system security and receive technical support, myToys.de replaced its Web site and order-processing system from multiple manufacturers with a new infrastructure based on Sun SPARC Enterprise servers, StorageTek storage systems, software, and technical support services.
Needing to completely rebuild its Windows-based Web portal and ASP.NET-based applications to support a larger audience with new services, radio broadcaster RTL France began shopping around for a cost-effective, energy-efficient, and easy to manage IT environment that would be reliable and scalable. Open source solutions were its preference. RTL France decided to build a new portal infrastructure using Sun CoolThreads and x64 servers, running Solaris 10. For its applications, Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server proved fast and scalable.
