Oracle's new StorageTek Virtual Library Extension (VLE) is the industry’s first highly scalable second tier of disk storage that optimizes tape processing in mainframe environments. The VLE delivers two times the disk scalability of IBM's mainframe tape solutions to boost performance and accommodate growing workloads and five times the availability. Oracle's press release notes that VLE is the only mainframe solution that offers a completely integrated three-tier approach to storage (FC disk, SAS disk and tape) in a single solution that simplifies management and provides better performance at a lower cost than offerings from other vendors.

A new product, the VSM5e, and a native ESCON to VSM5 are the subjects of this product announcement. The capabilities that the VSM4 provided will now be found in the functionalities of the VSM5. VSM5e is being developed to provide an entry level VSM5 system for cost sensitive customers.
