09 Jun 2015 HGST's new 10TB drive: Not for everyone [43343]
ZDNet, June 9th, 2015

"HGST announced delivery of the world's first 10TB hard drive. That's a 10,000x increase from the first 1GB 3.5" drives shipping 20 years ago.

Areal density increases are coming slowly as the drive industry gears up for patterned media and heat-assisted magnetic recording. Both require large investments before mass production.

Instead, the new drive uses shingled magnetic recording (SMR) and HGST's proprietary - and industry leading - HelioSeal helium drive platform to drive capacity. Get used to hearing about SMR, because it's going to be with us from now on..."

29 Jan 2015 What is Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR)? [40680]
storagereview.com, January 29th, 2015

"In the simplest terms, Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) is a new hard drive technology that allows the tracks on a platter to be layered on top of each other, just like roof shingles on a house, to increase platter density or tracks per inch (TPI). Current technology, Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR), uses a parallel track layout. By increasing TPI with SMR technology and decreasing the space between tracks, SMR offers tremendous potential for overall hard drive capacity gains. The end product physically looks and feels like a standard PMR drive, with higher capacity in the same physical footprint. However, the architecture change means the user experience from a performance perspective will be dramatically different..."

17 Feb 2014 HAMR Promises To Boost Storage Capacity [35056]
Network Computing, February 17th, 2018

"Thankfully, the Shingled Magnetic Recording technology I discussed in my first post on SMR can provide the next capacity boost the drive industry needs.

Unfortunately, the challenges of SMR technology, which I wrote about in my article on using SMR drives will both limit just how much added capacity SMR can deliver and prevent SMR from being used for any sort of random workload. However, a technology that generates plenty of hardware store and worksite jokes -- Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) -- promises to help..."
