SPARC T4-4 Delivers New World Record Performance [28397]
Subsecond Response Time on Oracle OLAP Perf Version 2 Benchmark
Oracle's SPARC T4-4 server server with 4 x SPARC T4 processors, 3.0 GHz, and 1 TB memory delivered world record performance with subsecond response time on the Oracle OLAP Perf Version 2 benchmark using Oracle Database 11g Release 2 with Oracle OLAP option running on Oracle Solaris 11. Data storage employed 1 x Sun Fire X4275 (using COMSTAR) and 2 x Sun Storage F5100 Flash Array (each with 80 FMODs). Redo storage used 1 x Sun Fire X4275. The SPARC T4-4 server achieved throughput of 430,000 cube-queries/hour with an average response time of 0.85 seconds and the median response time of 0.43 seconds.

'Oracle Solaris 11 System Administration: The Complete Reference' [28398]
Co-author Harry Foxwell Discusses the New Title for SysAdmins
Harry Foxwell, co-author of "Oracle Solaris 11 System Administration: The Complete Reference" (the others are Michael Jang, Christine Tran and Alan Formy-Duval) discusses the book in a video announced in a post by Glynn Foster. The book itself leads readers to the ability to manage a highly scalable, cloud-based computing platform and deliver unmatched performance levels at every layer of the IT stack. The book also shows how to deploy Solaris from scratch and provides up-to-date details on installation options, device configuration, virtualization techniques, network security, file encryption, and Web services. How to Migrate Oracle Database 10 From Oracle Solaris 8 to Oracle Solaris 11 [28394]
Using the Oracle Solaris 8 P2V (Physical to Virtual) Tool
Orgad Kimchi has created a procedure for migrating Oracle Database from Oracle Solaris 8 to Oracle Solaris 11. His procedure utilizes the Oracle Solaris 8 P2V (physical to virtual) Archiver tool to migrate a physical Oracle Solaris 8 system with Oracle Database 10.2.0.5 and an Oracle Automatic Storage Management file system located on SAN storage connected via a Fibre Channel HBA into an Oracle Solaris 8 branded zone inside an Oracle Solaris 10 guest domain on top of an Oracle Solaris 11 control domain. Kimchi demonstrates both how to preserve the host information and how to modify the host name.

Some Advice on Updating to Solaris 11.1 [28309]
Changes to Included FOSS Packages Require Special Attention
Before upgrading from Oracle Solaris 11.0 to 11.1, Alan Coopersmith advises users to have a look at "How to Update to Oracle Solaris 11.1 Using the Image Packaging System" by Peter Dennis. Still, Coopersmith writes, updating Solaris 11 is much easier than updating Solaris 10. Coopersmith includes a detailed side-by-side list that shows most of the changes to the FOSS packages between Solaris 11.0 and 11.1. Some were excluded for clarity, he notes, or to reduce noise and duplication, adding that the FOSS packages whose version numbers did not change in their packaging info are not included.
