28 Jan 2016 Top 10 MySQL GUI Tools (Slideshow) [49396]
Database Journal, January 28th, 2016

"A few things have changed in the database landscape since our Top 10 MySQL GUI Tools list was compiled--in particular the emergence of cloud services. Keep that in mind when searching for the right MySQL admin tool.

Most relational databases, with the notable exception of MS Access, are comprised of two distinct components: the back-end, where the data is warehoused, and the front-end, a user interface for communicating with the data component. This type of design is quite clever, as it parallels the two tier programming model that separates the data layer from the user interface and allows the makers of the database software to focus on their product's strongest suit: data storage and management. By Laura Ramsey

Laura Ramsey writes, "Oracle SQL Developer 4.1 and SQL Developer Data Modeler 4.1 let customers design, develop, and deploy applications running on premises or in Oracle Database Cloud Services. And SQL Developer 4.1 sports a new interface for DBAs to observe critical metrics in real-time around IO, networking, wait events, storage, and more.

And here's how SQL Developer now supports Public Cloud Services-- It has a one-button-click solution for copying on-premises Oracle Databases to the Oracle Database Cloud Service. So you just right-click on a 12c Multitenant Pluggable Database and choose to either move, or copy to the Cloud Service.
