08 Jan 2017 South Florida Linux Users Group Monthly Meeting - Hardening Linux - Live @ NSU [59038]
Tuesday, January 20, 2017 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM

Please signup @

For the January meeting, we'll build a virtual private server with a modern version of Linux. We'll leverage the new Lightsail Virtual Private Server (VPS) service from Amazon.

  • $5/month: 512 MB Memory, 1 Core Processor, 20 GB SSD Disk, 1 TB Transfer
  • $10/month: 1 GB Memory, 1 Core Processor, 30 GB SSD Disk, 2 TB Transfer

... larger VPSs are available.

After starting the Linux VPS, we'll upgrade it and apply security best-practices. We'll use the PC connected to the projector to share the screen so that we can all see the commands and results.

We may have time to install and configure a few apps such as apache, MySQL and wordpress.

I'll ask FLUX members to take a stab at breaching the new server over the next month and in February we'll review the results!

I'm looking for a pizza/soda sponsor.

Please encourage your IT colleagues with an interest in Linux to attend.

The MySQL Enterprise Backup allows you to backup your database without the table locking you get with mysqldump. And, it is extremely fast - especially when you have to restore your database. Here is a sample speed comparison between MySQL Enterprise Backup and using mysqldump:..."

By Dave Stokes, January 6th, 2017

Dave, "MySQL has had a JSON data type since version 5.7 was released way back in '15. But did you know you could produce JSON output from non-JSON columns? It is very simple and saves a lot of time over trying to format it in your application.

World Database

We will be using the good old World database that MySQL has used for years in documentation, examples, and in the classroom. Starting with a simple query we will build up to something more complex..."
