JCP Executive Committee Vote Approves Java SE 7 and Java SE 8 Technical Specs [23764]
Standardizations in Java SE 7 Due in 2011; in Java SE 8 in 2012
According to a recent Oracle press release, the Java Specification Requests (JSRs) for the next two releases of the Java Platform - JSR-336 and JSR-337 - have been formally approved by an overwhelming majority in the JCP Executive Committee vote. This means that the Java standard can now begin to progress through the JCP while the open source reference implementation will be delivered through the OpenJDK project. As in the past, the plan, which includes community feedback and is endorsed by the JCP Executive Committee, calls for standardization of these technologies in Java SE 7 within 2011, and in Java SE 8 following in 2012. Java SE 7 will include language changes for improved developer productivity, dynamically typed language support, and performance improvements. Changes in Java SE 8 will include technologies in support of Java modularization and language enhancements for advanced multi-core support.

Oracle Announces Release Schedules
In case you missed the news, Markus Eisele takes the occasion of his blog entry on current Java technology developments to remind readers of what Mark Reinhold said about Java SE 7, 8 and 9 at JavaONE, which was, "7 has moved to 2011. 8, we can expect in 2012. I won't make any guesses about 9, but the current hint is to have releases on a more regular cadence every 18, 24 or maybe 36 months at the outside. A platform like Java, in order to stay alive, needs to keep moving. We are going to keep it moving."
