To complement the Sun 10-GE fiber board, Sun has launched the Single Mode Fiber (SMF) transceiver. In addition to the MMF transceiver, the SMF type will help customers to deploy long distance point-to-point 10-Gigabit Ethernet connections beyond 10 KM. This new product is ideal for customers who desire extended attachment to 10 Gigabit Ethernet LANs.
The Sun 10-GE SMF transceiver is offered under both X-option and ATO configurations. The X-option is offered in two parts: X5544A-4 10-GE Base board with no transceiver and X5559A Ethernet transceiver either with 10GBASE-ER: 1550nm, 40km and/or 10GBASE-LR: 1310nm, 10km (SMF). The base X-option board offers both standard and low profile brackets. Offering the X-option in two pieces allows customers the choice of purchasing a third-party transceiver for the X-option board only.
With the ATO option, the following parts are offered: 6644A Full board (with SMF transceiver) including standard brackets and 4466A Full board (with SMF transceiver) including low profile brackets. Offering two ATO board options that include the SMF transceiver allows the customer to choose from a standard and low-profile form factor configured to order parts and servers.
The SMF transceiver will support the Sun 10-GE Adapter's new features such as its:
- Low profile 64-bit PCIX plug-in card
- One full duplex 10GE interface (XFP module)
- Uses the Intel 82597EX PCIX MAC controller. (PCIX to XAUI)
- Uses Broadcom SERDES
- Support S9U7 and higher for SPARCR and X86 and Linux in 32/64-bit mode
- Dynamic Reconfiguration (DR)
- kstat support/Snoop support
- Support for promiscuous and multicast
- Jumbo frames
- Ipv4/IPv6 and IPMP support
- TCP/UDP/IP h/w checksum offload
- IEEE 802.1Q VLAN support
- NDD physical layer management configuration capability
The cable configuration support is 10GBASE-LR 1310nm 10km SMF.
This new product is ideal for customers who desire extended attachment to 10 Gigabit Ethernet LANs. Since 10 Gigabit Ethernet offers reliability, availability and scalability (RAS), customers can expect to realize significant cost savings, Sun reports. As 10 Gigabit Ethernet gains wider adoption, server/storage and data can be integrated and provide significant improvements in bandwidth performance, lowered latency, network attached storage (NAS) performance and reduced cabling expenses.
