Replacement models for the Sun FireTM V440 servers that are in compliance with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive of the European Union (EU) should be generally available March 20, 2006. Features of the Sun Fire V440 systems remain the same as the previous version other than these new systems are fully compliant with required standards of the RoHS.

In addition to this announcement, Sun also has issued the transition of non-RoHS compliant Sun Fire V440 servers as well as the release of three new configurations for the Sun Fire V440 server including the new 1.593 GHz UltraSPARCR IIIi processors that support 2 GB DIMMs and 146 GB 10K Ultra320SCSI disk drives and come with preinstalled SolarisTM 10 Operating System (Solaris OS) and Sun JavaTM Enterprise System software version 3. These new configurations will have general availability release dates as follows:

The high-performance, data center-class Sun Fire V440 server is a flexible platform for delivering low-cost, horizontally-scalable services and solutions. With up to four 1.593 GHz UltraSPARC IIIi processors, up to 32 GB of memory, up to four 146 GB Ultra320 SCSI disks, six PCI slots, two Gigabit Ethernet ports, identity transfer feature and remote server management capability, the rack-optimized 4U Sun Fire V440 server features an integrated architecture designed to meet a variety of different processing needs while reducing complexity and maximizing valuable data center floor space.

Customers should be aware that previously purchased Sun Fire V440 servers are not impacted by the RoHS directive, which only restricts the use of certain materials in the production of new systems and components sold in selected geographies after June 30, 2006. There are no restrictions on maintaining previously purchased equipment, including the need for services and spares. However, all existing part numbers will be retired at the time the EU's RoHS directive goes into effective on July 1, 2006. These part numbers will be replaced with new part numbers for RoHS-compliant versions. New part numbers will allow customers to recognize which systems are RoHS-compliant based on the top-level marketing part numbers. [...read more...]
