Three years ago, the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI) contracted with Harris Corporation to fully implement and meet timelines for the FTI; and in turn, Harris selected Sun to deploy an IT system for FTI Network Operations Center. Sun's successful deployment of hardware and software IT solutions for FTI was heralded this past week.

Harris, the FTI systems integrator and prime contractor, selected Sun early in the program as a partner capable of assisting Harris with a broad range of IT systems and services. The Sun-based IT system, which included Sun FireTM servers running the SolarisTM Operating System (Solaris OS), Sun StorEdgeTM 9900 disk storage, Sun tape libraries, Sun JavaTM System software and SunSM Services, is being regarded as a model for future government integration and modernization projects, Sun reports.

FTI is an industry and FAA alliance aimed at creating an integrated suite of modern telecommunications products, services and business practices to effectively meet all FAA strategic, operational, administrative and architectural goals. FTI will be the primary means to acquire telecommunications services for the FAA through 2017.

A broad spectrum of Sun IT solutions is used by the FTI program, which employs a modern, highly reliable, consolidated network infrastructure, while effectively incorporating Harris Corporation's multi-service capabilities.

"Sun's support with the architecture, design, installation and maintenance of many aspects of the dual Network Operations Centers for FTI is an important contribution towards the success of the program," said John O'Sullivan, Harris vice president of the FTI Program. "Harris has benefited greatly from this alliance, and we look forward to working with Sun on other government integration and modernization projects in the future."

The Harris-Sun alliance recently resulted in the milestone of Harris delivering the 1000th telecommunication service to the FAA for the FTI program. John Marselle, COO of Sun Microsystems Federal, commented, "The Harris-Sun alliance for FTI will allow others to see a Sun-based IT infrastructure in a uniquely integrated telecommunications system solution. What's more, we want all government systems integrators to view Sun as this kind of partner." [...read more...]
