New High-performance Low-latency Network Fabric Interconnects
Sun IB Switch 9p and Sun Dual Port 4x IB Host Channel Adapter PCI-X

Sun is announcing the Sun InfiniBand (IB) Switch 9p and Sun Dual Port 4x IB Host Channel Adapter PCI-X. Based on 4x(10Gbps) IB technology, these Sun hardware products now offer customers the ability to scale horizontally in clustered configurations without losing performance.

InfiniBand or IB is a low-latency, high-bandwidth server interconnect and shared I/O technology that offers a more efficient way to connect storage, communications networks and server clusters together, while delivering an I/O infrastructure that produces the efficiency, reliability and scalability that data centers demand. Standards for InfiniBand are governed by InfiniBand Trade Association.

These new Sun IB Host Channel Adapters and Switches are based on IB Architecture Specifications Standard v1.1, making them deployable in highly available and scalable enterprise database clusters or in high performance and technical computing (HPTC) environments. The IB architecture defines and supports many applications with Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) capabilities. By incorporating RDMA technology, Sun is capable of providing high-performance low-latency I/O interconnect for point-to-point or switched fabric server clustering solutions.

The Sun IB Switch 9p offers:

  • Nine 30Gbps/10Gbps (12x/4x) ports packaged in 1U rack mountable chassis
  • True non-blocking switch with aggregate bandwidth of 540Gbps
  • Fall thru latency of 86ns
  • All removable modules are hot swappable, including fans and power supplies
  • Intelligent switch with embedded ALOM system controller and integrated fabric management
  • CLI management for standalone management

The Sun Dual Port 4x IB Host Channel Adapter comes with the IB Host Channel Adapter card that supports protocols for uDAPL (databases) and IPoIB (Internet Protocol over InfiniBand). Other key features include:

  • Two form factor cards: Low profile card with regular height bracket (part #X1233A) and short height bracket (part # 1235A)
  • Dual 10Gbps InfiniBand 4x ports with copper connectors
  • Integrated Serializer/Deserializer (SerDes)
  • IBTA v1.1 compatible design
  • Supports large number of queue pairs
  • Based on Mellanox's InfiniRISC embedded RISC processor
  • Large on-chip InfiniBand port buffers
  • Low latency transport
  • 256MB of DDR memory
  • Support for eight data VLs plus the VL15 management lane
  • Quality of Service (QoS) features
  • Multicast, atomic and large message support
  • Native InfiniBand hardware transport acceleration

The Sun Dual Port 4x IB Host Channel Adapter is available immediately. The Sun IB Switch 9p is expected to be generally available on December 23, 2005. [...read more...]
