Sun Announces 1.5GHz UltraSPARC IV+ Uniboards
Delivers up to 50-80% Increased Throughput

Sun will be releasing new 1.5GHz UltraSPARCR IV+ Uniboards supported across its entire midrange and high-end server line in the next few weeks. These uniboards are designed to allow Sun FireTM servers to deliver up to 50-80 percent increased throughput over the UltraSPARCR IV-based servers and 3-3.5 times the throughput of the UltraSPARCR III-based systems.

The powerful UltraSPARC IV+ processor engine permits customers to incrementally grow their existing business and meet the demands of new services. Features of the 1.5GHz UltraSPARC IV+ processors include: - 90 nanometer design rules - 2MB on-chip Level 2 cache - 32MB Level 3 cache - Up to 12 processors & 24 compute threads on Sun FireTM E4900 - Up to 24 processors & 48 compute threads on Sun FireTM E6900 - Up to 36 processors & 72 compute threads on Sun FireTM E20K - Up to 72 processors & 144 compute threads on Sun FireTM E25K

As part of Sun's Throughput Computing strategy, these boards offer Sun Fire E4900-E25K customers investment protection and reduced total cost of ownership (TCO) with the ability to mix and match UltraSPARC III, IV and IV+ Uniboards in the same system along with the SolarisTM Application Compatibility guarantee. The common processor/memory boards supported in all Sun Fire E4900, Sun Fire E6900, Sun Fire E20K and Sun Fire E25K servers are forward and backward compatible and upgradable.

Because of the built-in, thread-level compatibility between UltraSPARC IV+, IV and III processors, all third-party software supported on any Sun Fire server will continue to function on Sun Fire E4900-E25K servers.

The new 1.5GHz UltraSPARC IV+ Uniboards offer an increase in performance while reducing TCO in comparison to the UltraSPARC III- and IV-based systems, and triple the compute capability of the UltraSPARC III-based systems in the same footprint. For example, with an existing application, customers can buy a smaller server or use fewer processors, resulting in a lower up-front cost, less power, reduced cooling and lower support and maintenance costs. This also allows customers to grow applications without having to buy new capacity as frequently. Additionally, due to the expanded compute capacity available with the new UltraSPARC IV+ Uniboards and Dynamic System Domains, the Sun Fire midrange and high-end servers are an ideal vehicle for server consolidation of aging competitive or UltraSPARCR II systems.

Customers interested in trading in their current server boards can take advantage of the SunSM Upgrade Advantage Program (UAP), which offers a 25 percent allowance for existing Sun Fire UltraSPARC III- or UltraSPARC IV-based Uniboards. Customers wanting to upgrade to the latest technology as soon as available can participate in the Sun UAP's accelerated server board upgrade program, which offers trade-in allowances of 40 percent for single generation board upgrades. An example of a single generation upgrade would be moving up from an UltraSPARC IV 1.35GHz to UltraSPARC IV+ 1.5GHz. This program applies to Sun FireTM V490-E25K server boards upgrades.

Standard configurations on Sun Fire E4900 and Sun Fire E6900 as well as upgrade options on the Sun Fire E4900-E25K will have these latest uniboards generally available for them on October 11, 2005. "
