It's now time for us and all companies in a position to help to look closer to home and share resources and expertise in any way that can help.

Constructing Internet Access Centers for Hurricane Ravaged Areas
Sun Volunteers Expertise, Personnel and Donations

Sun and the Sun Foundation sent volunteers and technicians to assist the Red Cross donation sites and communications equipment in an effort to bring relief and hope to the survivors of Hurricane Katrina. Sun technicians are working to put infrastructure in place to expand connectivity for evacuees in the areas impacted and assist impacted companies with business continuance efforts.

Additionally, Sun is collaborating with relief partners Red Cross and Aidmatrix on a virtual on-line drive to get needed resources to the impacted regions as quickly as possible.

"Our hearts go out to the victims of this disaster, tens of thousands of whom now find themselves without basic necessities or the ability to connect with the outside world," said Jonathan Schwartz, president and COO of Sun and president of the Sun Foundation. "We are sending numerous volunteer technicians armed with internet infrastructure to the Cajun Dome in Lafayette, Louisiana, to construct Internet access points so those affected may access email, search for missing loved ones and connect with friends and relatives desperately awaiting news."

Besides technical assistance, Schwartz noted that Sun employees were rising to the occasion by making personal donations to the matching gifts program of the Sun Foundation.

"The program raised USD$1.2 million for Tsunami relief earlier this year and we hope to meet or exceed that in response to Katrina," he said.

The Sun Foundation is a separate nonprofit charitable organization that is supported by contributions from Sun. Established in 1990, the Foundation has served as the primary vehicle for Sun's community investment efforts and to allow for international charitable contributions. The Foundation Board is composed of Sun senior management and relies on Sun's Global Community Development department for staffing.

"Sun is in the business of sharing and our 'Share the Opportunity' initiative delivers technical resources to those in need around the world," said Schwartz. "It's now time for us and all companies in a position to help to look closer to home and share resources and expertise in any way that can help."

Sun also has not forgotten its customers affected by Hurricane Katrina. The company has set up a disaster relief team to handle the service requests from Sun, StorageTek and SeeBeyond customers. To directly respond to these customers' requests, Sun has a team of specialists ready to assist. This team can be reached either by email: Sun-Support-for-Hurricane-Katrina@sun.com, or telephone, 800-872-4786. [...read more...]
