...this Sun solution offers users every necessary feature for implementing a service-oriented architecture (SOA).

The Sun JavaTM System Application Server is a solution that is bound to come into its own as an increasing number of enterprises look to JavaTM technology to support their operations. The predictable pricing and regular synchronized releases that Sun has built into the product, along with its high end-to-end performance with a number of web and enterprise applications, are sure to make it a prime candidate for return on investment (ROI) and lower total cost of ownership (TCO).

Detailed in a June 2005 Sun white paper entitled, "Migrating to the Sun JavaTM System Application Server 8," this Sun solution offers users every necessary feature for implementing a service-oriented architecture (SOA). No small consideration in assessing the value of the Java System Application Server is that it provides the JavaTM Platform, Enterprise Edition (JavaTM EE) application and web services runtime environment, while also serving as an integration point to existing systems. A definite strong selling point of the Java System Application Server for users who will employ it in the development, deployment and management of enterprise applications is its inclusion of a robust Java EE and web services platform that enables transaction management, performance, scalability, security and availability. The solution supports everything from web publishing to enterprise-scale transaction processing even as it allows developers to build applications based on SOA, web services and up-to-date Java EE technology.

Given the increasingly common practice of using multitier enterprise applications, it is no small point that the Java EE platform defines the standard for developing multitier enterprise applications, simplifying enterprise applications by basing them on standardized, modular components, providing a complete set of services to those components, and handling many details of application behavior automatically, without complex programming.

Based on a new architecture that significantly enhances earlier Sun application server products, the Sun Java System Application Server was found to be nearly twice as fast as leading competitors in transactions per second for Web Services-based applications in independent evaluations by PushToTest. The benchmark, comprising Document Literal, RCP-Literal, and SOAP with Attachments technologies, pitted the Sun Java System Application Server against the BEA WebLogic Server 8.1 SP2 and found the Sun solution 50-percent faster. The solution also delivers more users per server, reducing the number of servers needed and lowering capital maintenance costs.
