The Sun JavaTM System Application Server Platform Edition 8.1 2005Q2 UR2 is a maintenance release and available now for a free download from the Sun Developer Network Web site. This application server is a high performance, small footprint, JavaTM 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EETM) technology 1.4 compatible platform, suitable for broad adoption and embedding in ISV applications and third-party systems.

This release of the J2EE 1.4 SDK and the Sun Java System Application Server is available for the SolarisTM 8 Operating System (SPARCR Platform Edition); the Solaris 9 and 10 OS (SPARC Platform Edition) and for x86 Platforms; Sun JavaTM Desktop System; Windows 2000 Advanced Server; Windows XP; and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 and 3.0. Highlights of the 2005Q2 release include:

  • Admin Console GUI Enhancements: New capabilities include a JNDI namespace browser, JDBCTM Connection Validation, Deployment Descriptor Viewer, and improved monitoring.

  • Web Services Security: Offers container message security mechanisms implementing message-level authentication (e.g. XML digital signature and encryption) of SOAP web services invocations using the X509 and username/password profiles of the OASIS WS-Security standard.

  • JavaServerTM Faces 1.1 Support: Developers can quickly build web applications by assembling reusable UI components in a page; connecting these components to a data source; and wiring client-generated events to server-side event handlers.

  • JavaServer PagesTM (JSPTM)* Standard Tag Library 1.1 Support: This library encapsulates core functionality common to many JSP applications.

  • Performance Enhancements: Users will experience across the board performance improvements for startup, deployment and run-time as well as additional performance enhancing features such as Read-Only Beans, Last Agent Optimization, CMR Prefetching and Version Consistency.

  • Support for JavaTM 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SETM) 5.0.
