Free Downloads of Solaris 10 OS Now Available Thousands Have Downloaded Solaris DTrace
The SolarisTM 10 Operating System (Solaris OS) is available for its promised free download on the OpenSolaris Web site. Sun's UNIXR platform follows the initial source code release of the SolarisTM Dynamic Tracing or DTrace, which logged almost 4,000 downloads within the first 40 hours of its posting.
Developers may use the Solaris OS for commercial or noncommercial use, and Sun will supply security fixes as they're released with a signed support contract, reported ZDNet. The Solaris 10 OS is a vendor-neutral operating system that is available on more than 340 different hardware platforms from vendors as diverse as Dell, Fujitsu, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, IBM and HP.
Sun will be offering Solaris Service Plans at reportedly up to 40 percent less in cost than the leading Linux distribution. These subscription-based Solaris Service Plans will allow customers and partners to choose from three different service and support levels, dependent upon their particular IT requirements. These plans will be offered in Basic, Standard or Premium packages, each with scalable and predictable pricing that will be based on the number of processor sockets.
"There are already 750,000 installations of Solaris 10 through the Software Express for Solaris program. This strong interest underscores the fact that Solaris 10 is delivering tremendous value to customers, partners and developers," said John Loiacono, executive vice president, Software, Sun. "Coming on the heels of Sun's OpenSolaris announcement last week, the availability of Solaris 10 is the latest in a series of milestones for Sun."
Since November 2004, more than 400 new independent software vendors (ISVs) have committed to the Solaris 10 OS through the company's "Ten Moves Ahead" Partner Initiative that provides technical, marketing and sales benefits to partners developing applications on this latest version of the Solaris OS.
This wave of support is reflective of the innovative features offered with the Solaris 10 OS and the fact that Sun offers an application guarantee for its binaries and source code, ensuring customers and ISVs that their investment is protected.
During an OpenSolaris press call, Sun Chairman and CEO Scott McNealy commented that open sourcing Solaris 10 OS goes against the industries' trend of "disposing" of source code when it has reached its end of life.
"...one of the more interesting aspects of what we're doing here is Solaris...I've argued, right now, is easily the number one OS on the planet in terms of functionality, capability, enterprise readiness, security, scalability. You take any feature you want and Solaris is at or pretty close to the top. And across the board, I just call it the best OS on the planet far and none right now," McNealy said. "I'd also like to make the point that unlike a lot of other companies out there who are using Open Source as a way to dispose of end of life code, we have taken Solaris 10, the hottest OS on the planet with the latest and greatest features and committed that to Open Source. This is not an EOL. This is a super charging rocket launching way of driving the, what we think is the best IP in the OS space today forward.
"So that's what we're doing," he summarized. "We think it's quite a unique enhancement to the strategy with the patent indemnification. And we think a lot of the emerging nations and emerging businesses are going to be very excited about it."
