There is no longer a reason to make sacrifices when choosing between Linux and Solaris.

Project Janus: Run Linux Applications Unchanged on Solaris Operating System
Not Just a Linux Emulator, This is the Real Deal

Project Janus is a new feature of the SolarisTM 10 Operating System (Solaris OS) that allows Linux binary applications to run on Sun's operating system unchanged.

Broader access application availability for environments that include both Solaris OS and Linux will reduce the costs of development and administration within such a heterogeneous environment.

In-house designed or independent software vendor (ISV) applications for Linux that are not currently available on the Solaris OS will be accessible, enabling this Sun operating environment to run Linux applications natively on x86 platforms. With this type of Linux interoperability, customers will benefit from the security, scalability and reliability of the enterprise-ready Solaris OS without having to acquire additional x86-based hardware.

Designed to meet a variety of interoperability needs, Project Janus offers:

  • Greater efficiencies for IT managers through a more interoperable Solaris OS/Linux environment
  • Single workstation/server for developers to create, test and deploy applications for both environments
  • Capability to transfer common administration skills between platforms
  • Combined with the N1TM Grid Container software, a virtual Linux environment on a Solaris OS system can be created with Solaris OS and Linux applications isolated from each other and from system faults
  • 100 percent compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 (RHEL 3)

"Sun's commitment to Linux and the Linux community is stronger than ever," said John Loiacono, Sun's executive vice president for software. "Our strategy has always been to provide the very best interoperability for heterogeneous environments. Now customers can leverage all the breakthrough attributes of the Solaris 10 operating system with existing investments in the Linux applications at a price lower than what they are paying for Linux. There is no longer a reason to make sacrifices when choosing between Linux and Solaris."

Tested applications that have proven to be compatible when run with Project Janus include Adobe Acrobat Reader, Oracle 9.2.i, SAS, BEA WebLogic and more. A complete list of these applications will be available with the release of Solaris 10 OS later this year. [...read more...]
