Sun Ray Server Software 3.0 Beta Version to be Released
Extends Sun Ray Ultra-thin Client Technology to the Linux Platform

Sun recently previewed its latest Sun RayTM offering that will provide its innovative ultra-thin client technology to the Linux market. The Sun RayTM Server Software 3.0 (SRSS) is part of Sun's growing support for, and advancement of the Linux community.

With contributions such as a zero-administration desktop environment, the SRSS 3.0 is ideal for a variety of industries such as enterprise, government and technical customers who will now be able to effectively operate with one IT administrator managing thousands of desktops. Anticipated new features with the SRSS 3.0 release include cross-platform support with Linux, regional hot desking, bandwidth enhancements, expanded peripheral support, privacy mode and local area network (LAN) deployment capability.

Benefits of the Sun Ray ultra-thin clients include significant cost-savings on the desktop, increased worker productivity and enhanced security. Traditional thin clients require a local operating system on the client. With Sun Ray ultra-thin clients, a centralized compute resource is utilized to significantly lower hardware costs while protecting them from viruses.

The Sun Ray client works by equipping users with access to their individual desktop session that is running on the server, where all computation and rendering occurs. Users are able to switch from one Sun Ray client to another, or hot desk, using a Java CardTM technology-enabled smart card and instantly access their particular desktop with the same applications that appeared on their last session.

"Sun Ray clients help customers realize significant cost savings by eliminating complex desktop infrastructure with Sun Ray ultra-thin client's centralized management and enhanced security," said Herb Hinstorff, director, Desktop Solutions at Sun. "With the Sun Ray platform extending to the Linux environment, more customers can now take advantage of all the benefits of Sun Ray ultra-thin clients."

Plans to extend the Sun Ray ultra-thin client technology to the Linux platform were announced at the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo earlier this month. The release date of the SRSS 3.0 beta version has not been determined, however, availability of the software will be announced at the following Web site:
