According to the preliminary 2Q03 Worldwide Server Database report
released by Gartner Dataquest, Sun outpaced the overall marked and all
tracked competitors in server unit volume growth. The report
concentrates on unit shipments, rather than revenue, for all operating
systems and for worldwide x86 32-bit servers.
Sun's year-to-year server volume growth rate came in at 35.5 percent
(in all OS), beating all other tracked vendors and topping the 24.6
percent growth rate for all OS in the overall market. In addition, Sun
is the only vendor in the top five to record double-digit growth in
terms of server volume on a year-over-year and a quarter-to-quarter
basis, strongly outperforming the market in both instances.
Sun attained a 109.4 percent unit shipment growth rate year-over-year
and 45.6 percent growth rate quarter-to-quarter, the largest increases
in both measures of any vendor. "We are bringing Sun's enterprise
experience and software to the x86 server space with growth in mind.
These numbers show we are making progress in a market where the revenue
we generate is almost all incremental," said John Fowler, executive
vice president, Network Systems Group at Sun. "Keep in mind these
numbers are tabulated before we unveiled the 4-way Opteron Sun FireTM
V40z server, which should further demonstrate our commitment and
leadership in this market."
"Increased unit volume is a leading indicator of economic health," said
Larry Singer, Sun's senior vice president, strategic insights officer.
"By selling more servers, we're capturing more ISVs, expanding our
footprint in the market, providing the vehicle for selling more
SolarisTM Operating System (Solaris OS) software and our Sun JavaTM
Enterprise System software, and ultimately revving our engine for
revenue growth."
In addition to its gains in the server market, Sun also experienced
volume growth in other market sectors in the last quarter:
- A 74 percent sequential increase in Sun Java Enterprise System software subscribers in CY04Q2, now totaling 303,000
- A 25 percent increase in Solaris OS (x86 Platform Edition) registered licenses, now totaling almost 1.1 million
- A record-setting service revenue of more than $1 billion
