Saskatchewan Telecommunications (SaskTel) has deployed the Sun JavaTM
Enterprise System running on the SolarisTM 9 Operating System
(Solaris OS), to support its new eMessaging solution targeted at small-
to medium-sized enterprises in Western Canada.
SaskTel is a full-service communications company that offers complete
wire-line, wireless, Internet and e-Business solutions to businesses
and residents in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Implementing
the Sun Java Enterprise System with the aid of SunSM Services
consultants enabled SaskTel to cut 12 months from the time-to-market
for the new service.
This translates, according to an analysis by E-Business Strategies,
into more than $4 million in net present value. The same analysis
projects a three-year ROI based on the initial Sun Java Enterprise System
subscription at more than 700 percent.
"With roughly 454,000 business and residential customers, we needed a
simple and affordable solution that would grow with the company. The
Java Enterprise System provides us with the flexibility we need to meet
our business goals by expanding our portfolio to satisfy growing
business communication needs with a full and expandable suite of
services," said Curt Smith, general manager, SaskTel. "Today, when you
use the term mail service, it's no longer just thought of as e-mail the
application. It includes directory services, calendar services, storage
on the server, wireless capabilities, as well as the other applications
that come around to make it more of a software system -- and the Java
Enterprise System provided all those components in one integrated
system."
"Sun continues to see widespread adoption of the Java Enterprise System
in vertical markets such as telecommunications and healthcare where
customers can easily leverage the innovative infinite usage model to
deliver value-added services to users and partners at no extra cost,"
said John Loiacono, executive vice president of Software at Sun. "Sun
has seen tremendous market demand for the Java Enterprise System since
its release in early 2004, demonstrating that the value proposition of
reducing infrastructure software cost and complexity is resonating with
CIOs."
An additional element in SaskTel's having achieved so aggressive a
time-to-market was the assistance provided by Sun Services, which
conducted a two-day architecture workshop -- a standard service for Sun
customers with more than 1,000 employees -- to identify business and
technology requirements, plot an implementation road map and build an
overarching architecture design for the solution.
