A technical article on the Sun Developers Web site compares the Sun JavaTM System Application Server (formerly known as SunTM ONE Application Server) to the Sun JavaTM System Web Server (formerly known as SunTM ONE Web Server), weighing out the differences between the two and recommending the one to choose in a variety of situations.

Writers Tai-Wei (David) Lin and Marina Sum divide their article into the following sections:

  • Questions and Prescriptions: The writers pose a series of questions to quickly assist readers in determining the right product for a particular situation. Prescribed solutions are given addressing these unique situations.

  • Product Features: In this section, not only do Lin and Sum compare differences between the Sun Java System Application Server and the Sun Java System Web Server, they also address the variations between different editions of the application server.

  • Support of Technologies and Platforms at a Glance: A comparative chart is outlined listing the technologies and platforms supported by the Sun Java Application Server Releases 7 and 8, and the Sun Java Web Server. The technologies and platforms are divided into Non-JavaTM 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EETM) technologies, JavaTM platform, Web technologies, Web Services, Operating Systems, Databases, High availability and Miscellaneous sections for easy comparison.

In conclusion, Lin and Sum deduce the following:

  • "Sun Java System Web Server is a good choice for developing applications that are based on all major Web technologies, including JSPTM and JavaTM Servlet technologies.

  • Sun Java System Application Server supports J2EE applications. For development and departmental deployments, its PE version offers a production-quality J2EE container for free.
