Intelligence firm BMI-TechKnowledge (BMI-T) reported that Sun has increased its server market share in South Africa significantly over the past few years and expects the rise to continue over the next three years.

BMI-T's South Africa Commercial Systems and Servers (SACSS) forecast and analysis for 2002-2007 indicates Sun's total market share to increase 34.2 percent in volume and 6.9 percent in value year on year.

Recent research by BMI-T reveals Sun has increased its hold of the total market in revenue terms to 18.7 percent, while total units shipped has grown by 3.4 percent. In the mid-range and volume server segments, Sun recorded revenue growth of 82.9 percent and 16.5 percent respectively.

"The midrange sector has been good to Sun," said Vito Bonafede, regional director for Sun sub-Saharan Africa. "In addition to the remarkable revenue growth, we were the only major vendor to achieve growth in terms of units in 2003."

In the South African RISC-based systems, Sun's market segment grew by 42 percent in terms of units shipped and by 23.1 percent in terms of revenue. Sun remains the leader in South Africa with a 56.2 percent in terms of units shipped.

The BMI-T report identifies Sun leading the UNIXR-based system market in South Africa with 43.4 percent of revenue and 62.2 percent of shipments.

"With the introduction of new volume-based server technologies based on the AMD Opteron and Intel platforms, we anticipate a strong performance in the coming year as we are effectively competing in some markets for the first time," said Bonafede. "Our combined technology offerings are the most complete in the market, and provide some of the most competitive price/performance comparisons of any vendor."

Bonafede indicated that in the overall volume rankings for 2003, Sun placed fifth with a 64.8 percent increase in shipments year-on-year despite its year-on-year value dropping by 22.6 percent to a total of $29.50 million in the high-end server segment. [...read more...]
