Sun and its Java CardTM technology received the Frost & Sullivan Market Leadership Award for exhibiting market share leadership through the implementation of market strategy.

With the Java Card infrastructure, Sun lowered the costs and time required for smart card implementations, underscoring its success in secure identity technologies.

Sun has released an early access version of the Sun Java Card Enterprise Software and plans on releasing the general availability version this fall. With this software, Java Card platform will be interoperable within different computing environments. This Sun Java technology reduces integration costs while preserving security and interoperability benefits.

"Java as a computing platform has gained the trust of the IT community and is fast growing in popularity as the preferred computing environment," said Karthik Nagarajan, senior smart cards research analyst at Frost & Sullivan. "Sun Microsystems has been consistent in capitalizing on this development to promote Java Card technology. This enables the company's licensees to provide its customers not just with a smart card solution, but also an integrated larger solution to their authentication needs."

Java Card technology has been deployed in more than 600 million units worldwide with an aim to improve physical and network security and to provide secure digital identity.

"In 1996, long before secure identity became a buzz word, Sun made the strategic investment to create the industry's best identity technology and to build a business around it - Java Card," said Peter Cattaneo, director of the Java Card Business Group at Sun. "Today we are extending our product line to simplify integration of strong authentication into identity management systems."

These multi-application smart cards are being used in mobile telephony, financial services, government, healthcare, enterprise identity and other markets within organizations such as the United States Department of Defense, the Bureau of National Health Insurance of Taiwan and the Government of Belgium.

"In a world where everything is connected, confidence in security and identity are paramount," said Cattaneo. "We're proud to receive this prestigious honor from Frost & Sullivan. Sun has always understood that value is driven from network connectivity." [...read more...]
