Remora Technologies is one of the first system integrators offering a range of locally supported SolarisTM and Linux Notebooks in Australia. Supported by Tadpole Computers Inc., these systems include SPARCR-based Solaris Notebooks and Intel-based Linux Notebooks.

"For the first time in Australia, we now have Linux and Solaris Notebooks with full support and warranty being provided locally by Tadpole distributor, Alstom IT," said Robert Silver, CEO of Remora. "This makes the product line very attractive and a viable alternative by giving customers the peace of mind that service and support is available in Australia rather than overseas."

The most basic model in the notebook range is the Tadpole TALIN with 2.4 GHz Pentium 4 processor system preinstalled with the Sun JavaTM Desktop System, a fully integrated desktop client environment with administration and developer tools and enterprise-ready support, along with StarOfficeTM, a leading office productivity suite offering word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing and database capabilities.

According to Silver the introduction of the TALIN notebook family comes at a time when businesses are considering moving from expensive, proprietary solutions to alternative desktops that offer affordable, open and interoperable environments.

"Based on the strong growth we are experiencing with laptop sales here in Australia, and the increasing adoption of the Linux operating environment, we expect this business to grow rapidly during the following six months," he said.

Tadpole Computers Inc., the world's leading vendor of UNIXR platform notebooks for more than twelve years, works closely with Sun to design, manufacture and customize products and services that are complementary and compatible with Sun solutions.

The most affordable, full featured SPARC-based UNIX notebooks on the market are Tadpole's SPARCLE notebook range that can be used to demonstrate, run and develop Solaris OS applications or be used as a portable SPARC-powered server.

"Probably the largest group of users of the SPARCLE notebooks will be engineers and sales people who develop or sell Solaris solutions," Silver commented. "Solaris programs are generally complex, and a sales person or engineer can't easily install software on a customer's system to demonstrate their product. The SPARCLE, as a portable server, enables live demonstrations of software products making a presentation a lot more compelling than a series of PowerPoint slides describing how a program runs."
