PureMessage is a new product from Sophos that is integrated with the Sun
JavaTM System Messaging Server and designed to defend IT
infrastructures against viruses and spam. The collaboration between
Sophos and Sun addresses the threat of exploitation faced by
high-volume messaging environments such as telecommunication carriers,
universities and large enterprises.
"The very open environment in which universities operate makes spam
management a particular challenge. Left unaddressed, a spam attack,
combined with our normal volume of email, can overburden our mail
system and distress our 60,000 computer users. The Sun and Sophos
integration will certainly help us to better manage the email security
threats and chaos they create, providing users with unobstructed access
to legitimate email, even on spam attack days," said Annie Stunden,
chief information officer for the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
"Given the business-critical nature of email, organizations must
develop a comprehensive approach to mail hygiene and message control,
while also ensuring compliance with internal and federal communication
policies and regulations," said Matt Cain, vice president with analyst
firm META Group's Technology Research Services. "Ideally, they should
choose a solution that provides multiple areas of protection at the
server or gateway level. This type of approach to email management
creates procurement, operational and functional efficiencies and
results in the lowest TCO for large organizations."
The integrated Sophos and Sun solution enables the Sun JavaTM
Enterprise System to communicate directly with PureMessage via channel
architecture in the Sun Java System Messaging Server without the
introduction of additional layers of management or communication
bottlenecks in the network. Neither does the solution require a
third-party Message Transfer Agent to broker the communication.
Organizations can get up-to-date protection against messaging threats
using one of the fastest, most comprehensive and easy-to-deploy
solutions on the market.
"Deploying systems with scalability and high availability services
capable of delivering millions of email messages per day, while
simultaneously helping to protect users from unwanted spam and viruses
enables organizations to realize the full potential of their messaging
and collaboration systems," said Patrick Dorsey, marketing director,
Communication and Collaboration Products for Sun. "This
new solution from Sun and Sophos further enhances the proven
scalability and content filtering capabilities of the Java Enterprise
System, enabling enterprises and ISPs alike to increase user
productivity through the reduction of spam in their inbox."
"Sophos customers have come to expect the highest level of email-borne
threat protection, including scalability that meets the demands of the
highest-volume messaging environments," said Shawn Thomas, director of
market development for Sophos. "The combination of Sophos PureMessage
with the Java Enterprise System high-volume messaging component
provides greater infrastructure choice to our largest customer
environments."
The Sun Java Enterprise System provides extensive security features
that help ensure the integrity of communications through user
authentication, session encryption and content filtering to help
prevent spam and viruses.
Sophos PureMessage, which combines industry-leading anti-virus and
anti-spam technologies with flexible policy management and world-class
support, is the most comprehensive, flexible and mature mail filtering
solution for businesses.
Protecting against network downtime, productivity loss and
vulnerability of informational assets, PureMessage safely removes up to
98 percent of spam at the gateway, using the latest anti-spam
techniques. Quarantine digests enable end-users to easily access
blocked messages, eliminating the business impact of false positives.
