Advanced Logistics Solution Integrates Business, Asset Management Modules
Sun and IFS Defense Joint Solution to Benefit A&D Organizations

An advanced logistics platform of software and hardware will be delivered in a joint project by Sun and IFS Defense to Aerospace and Defense (A&D) organizations. This joint solution offers IFS applications running on the Sun JavaTM Enterprise System and the SolarisTM Operating System (Solaris OS).

Lodewyk de Beer, solutions architect at Sun in South Africa, stated that this product includes fully integrated business and asset management modules supporting complex configuration management and maintenance requirements that are found within the air, land and sea environments. de Beer noted that this pre-configured solution helps reduce the cost, complexity and risk of technological deployments by providing a complete, tested set of products that can be rapidly and predictably implemented.

"IFS Defense is providing its unique component-based solution on Sun's open software system to improve efficiency and drive down costs through universal, real-time access to extended supply chain and product data anytime, anywhere," said De Beer.

IFS applications support the management and control of defense assets, programs and resources throughout their lifecycles. This particular solution offers support for providers of contractor logistics support and performance-based logistics to meet the needs of maintenance, repair and overhaul service providers and outsourcers.

Together, Sun and IFS Defense are streamlining the processes to help facilitate collaboration. Built on standards-based technologies, this solution offers the Army, Navy and Air Force, as well as the organizations that support them, a secure foundation upon which they can exchange information.

"A deeper technology alliance is the foundation for delivering the level of flexibility and dependability that defense organizations require to run a more lean operation within rigorous compliance regulations," said De Beer. "Running on the Sun Java Enterprise System and the scalable Solaris OS, the IFS and Sun defense solution provides rapid, adaptive deployment of services and secure sharing of data across disparate information systems."

The companies' complementary solutions serve the consumer well with advanced performance. The Sun Java Enterprise System enhances the scalability and integratability of IFS applications and supports its modularity in full. In the past, Sun and IFS have produced near linear scalability and performance up to 15,000 simultaneous users or 390,900 business transactions per hour for IFS applications running on Sun FireTM servers.

"This performance achievement is the result of a strong engineering alliance," said de Beer, "and long-term commitment from Sun and IFS." [...read more...]
