Identity management and open, interoperable, decentralized standards
are goals that the Liberty Alliance Project is working toward. This
white paper outlines benefits the government will procure if these
standards are implemented.
As noted on the group's Web site, the Liberty Alliance Project was
formed to establish an open standard for federated network identity.
Consisting of 150 leading organizations worldwide, this group believes
that federated identity answers many of the inefficiencies and
complications of network identity management facing both businesses and
consumers.
In this white paper, the writers argue that substantial benefits can be had by implementing federated identity including:
- Improved alliances, both within governments and between governments,
through interoperability with autonomy
- Faster response time for critical communications
- Cost avoidance, cost reduction and increased operational efficiencies
- Stronger security and risk management
- Interoperability and decreased development time
Liberty Alliance's overall goal is to create specifications that
incorporate, leverage and support other industry standards, allowing
members and organizations to build products and services that will
interoperate and promote secure federated identity management.
"Today's administrative and business environment has created an
unprecedented need to securely share sensitive information among
national, regional and local governments, agencies and organizations,
as well as with citizens and business entities," the writers contend.
"The true distributed computing platform created by the Internet brings
into sharp relief the importance of adhering to emerging privacy
standards and data security regulations."
The writers cover all aspects of the topic from presenting "The Ideal
Solution" to "Public Sector Benefits" to a "Call to Action."
Written by Liberty Alliance members, authors include Frank
Kaupa, American Express; Luc Mathan, France Telecom; Paule Sibieta,
France Telecom; Piper Cole, Sun Microsystems; Andrew Shikiar, Sun
Microsystems; and Stephen Deadman, Vodafone. The paper was edited by Tanya
Candia, Sigaba.
