For continuous innovation and improvement in existing technologies, Sun was named a leader in grid computing technology and winner of this year's Frost & Sullivan Excellence in Technology award. Announced in a recent study "The Distributed Systems Market," Sun was recognized for its work in the open source Grid Engine project and SunTM Grid Engine Enterprise Edition.

"Grid Engine technology has emerged to be world-class grid enabling software for demanding research and commercial requirements alike," said Amreetha Vijayakumar, Frost & Sullivan research analyst. "From the open source Grid Engine project through the highly capable Sun Grid Engine Enterprise Edition, Sun has a solid product foundation for their grid offerings. We're pleased to recognize Sun's accomplishments with this award."

The Sun Grid Engine Enterprise Edition is policy-based service-oriented infrastructure used to create, access and manage a grid of networked heterogeneous systems. This N1TM Grid System software product is a core component of the Sun Grid Solutions offerings targeting High Performance and Technical Computing (HPTC) requirements for compute grids, data grids, visualization grids and access grids.

"Sun Grid Engine Enterprise Edition is a key element in Sun's systems-based strategy for datacenter automation because of the emergence of grid computing into the broader domain of enterprise computing," said David Nelson-Gal, Sun's vice president of N1 Grid Systems. "The N1 Grid System, which provides the core software services for establishing, partitioning, provisioning and managing enterprise grids, lets customers get the most out of existing resources while automating previously costly and error-prone activities."

Sun uses a three-pronged approach when deploying grids with its customers: 1) provides modular grid-ready components such as Sun Grid Engine Enterprise Edition; 2) collaborates with customers using Sun ReferenceSM Architectures and SunSM Customer Ready Systems; and 3) provides full service offerings provided by Sun Professional ServicesSM.

Industry excellence in diligence, commitment and innovative business strategies required to advance in the global marketplace are elements Frost & Sullivan look for when handing out awards. This growth consulting firm also looks for a company that has pioneered the introduction of an innovative technology into the market, particularly one that is expected to bring significant contributions to the industry in terms of adoption, change and competitive posture.

"We're honored to receive this award in recognition of Sun's efforts to bring Grid Everywhere," said Shahin Khan, vice president of High Performance and Technical Computing at Sun. "Our open, solutions-oriented perspective to drive adoption of grid computing is exemplified in the Grid Engine open source project and in Sun Grid Engine Enterprise Edition." [...read more...]
