The Seventh JiniTM Community Meeting held this past March at Cambridge,
MA, yielded a wealth of information regarding Jini technologies and
developments. Following are some of the presentations featured at the
meeting.
"Jini and .NET"
by Alexander Krapf, Codemesh Inc.
Kraph discussed his organization's latest project that involved
extending Jini technology into the .NET realm, thereby bringing the power of
Jini technology to native Windows applications. The technical challenges
in integrating JavaTM technology and Jini technology into
the .NET world were
covered with emphasis on type mapping, integration architecture and
P/Invoke & JNI.
"Driving Jini Adoption: A Developer's Perspective"
by Dan Creswell, The Blitz Project/Lone Crusader Ltd.
Creswell, who has been working with Jini since its inception, started
The Blitz Project to address adoption issues regarding Jini technology,
which has had its share of adoption problems. This presentation
summarized Creswell's personal experience with Jini technology, including some of
the common myths he's encountered when talking to developers or
analysts regarding it. Creswell also offered suggestions on ways the Jini
community might evolve to more actively encourage use of Jini technology. Technical and non-technical issues were identified as pertinent concerns by Creswell
-"Development and Deployment Using the Jini Technology Starter Kit...: -
by Brian Murphy, Sun
The "utility model" of the starter kit that is designed for the development of services and clients highlighted Murphy's talk. The
starter kits' "un-integrated" tools and utility classes encapsulate
common, useful functionality that Murphy contended, when employed
appropriately, can help simplify the process of developing
and deploying well-behaved services and clients. Murphy emphasized the utility model's flexibility in individual design decisions while it still addresses many important development and deployment needs.
