Since the appointment of Jonathan Schwartz as new chief operating officer and president of Sun the first week of April 2004 (see article [12707] for details), Sun has made some reorganizations, including two new organizations within Sun for Throughput Systems and Network Systems.

Throughput Systems Organization, David Yen

David Yen will lead the newly formed Throughput Systems organization. The Sun products Yen will be responsible for are Sun's microprocessors, enterprise systems and SPARCR processor-based volume systems initiatives. He will move Sun's Throughput Computing and Throughput Networking initiatives forward.

Network Systems Organization, John Fowler

John Fowler will lead the new Network Systems organization which will incorporate Intel and AMD processor-based systems, Fowler will act as Network Systems' acting executive vice president and lead technology officer for Schwartz. The Network Systems organization will focus on delivering low-cost horizontally scaled systems with off-the-shelf components that leverage industry economics.

Schwartz stated the reorganization is "the first step toward our next wave of innovation, not simply in technology, but in our business models, service offerings and market focus." He stated the reorganization will draw talent from within Sun and outside of Sun. "We are executing a carefully considered plan to drive operational efficiencies, strategic alignment and cost reductions -- while continuing to deliver differentiated value to customers." He also expressed confidence in the ability of Sun's products such as the SolarisTM Operating System (Solaris OS) with AMD's Opteron, Intel's Xeon and SPARCR processors.

Anil Gadre was named interim chief marketing officer, and Brian Sutphin will be vice president, corporate development.

Departures from Sun were chief marketing and strategy officer, Mark Tolliver, and executive vice president of volume systems products, Neil Knox.
