...developers can efficiently employ visual coding and focus on user interaction and business logic...

Developers are sufficiently excited about the early access release of the Sun JavaTM Studio Creator application development tool that more than 10,000 have signed up for it.

This comprehensive develop/debug/deploy out-of-the-box solution incorporates the first release of production JavaServerTM Faces technology, making for greater performance and coding efficiency. The product also includes:

  • Sun JavaTM Enterprise System runtime to allow developers to quickly evaluate applications in pre-production, including the Sun JavaTM System Application Server, Platform Edition

  • PointBase, an SQL database server (included with the Sun Java System Application Server)

  • The JavaTM 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SETM) Platform Software Development Kit (SDK)

  • Developer aids such as examples, tutorials, JavaServer Faces visual components and more

Because the Sun Java Studio Creator solution so seamlessly integrates tools, runtimes and components, developers can efficiently employ visual coding and focus on user interaction and business logic rather than being preoccupied with system infrastructure and Web Services minutiae.

"The largest segment of the developer community has relied on visual development as the means to rapidly create solutions for the Web and the enterprise," said Richard Green, VP, Developer Platforms Group, Sun Microsystems. "At the same time, the Java technology platform has been the choice for developers creating network, desktop and mobile applications by providing an open, end-to-end, high-performance technology platform, as well as a competitive business model. Java Studio Creator brings these two worlds together, enabling the largest single community of developers to move to Java technology."

With this Early Access release, the Sun Java Studio Creator tool has been moved to NetBeans version 3.6, adding stronger JavaServer PagesTM (JSPTM) syntax support in the code editor, improving code completion and enhancing the debugger. The solution frees developers from the limitations of proprietary languages, technologies and runtimes.

In addition, the Sun Java Studio Creator tool's use of Java DataBase Connectivity (JDBC) RowSet (JSR 114) technology simplifies and streamlines access to databases, boosting productivity by minimizing coding complexity for connecting to databases and performing queries against them.

Several other standards are supported by the Sun Java Studio Creator tool, which include Java XML Pack software and the JavaTM 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EETM) 1.3 and 1.4 Web container.

"The JavaServer Faces specification and the [Sun] Java Studio Creator product promise to provide developers with the ability to create more visually-rich applications," said Patrick Megard, director, visualization product line, ILOG. "ILOG has been actively engaged with the JSF specification and Sun Java Studio Creator. The Early Access release of Sun Java Studio Creator is a milestone in making the power of Java component technology available to the majority of developers."

Sun Java Studio Creator is slated to support the SolarisTM Operating System (Solaris OS), Linux and Windows when the tool becomes generally available in Summer 2004. [...read more...]
