Gamers Anticipate Release of Online Multiplayer Gaming Solution for Java Technology Nokia SNAP Mobile Targets Java Technology Gaming Market
An online multiplayer gaming solution for JavaTM technology-based
games is scheduled for release during the third quarter of 2004. This
new solution called Scalable Network Application Package (SNAP) Mobile
incorporates Nokia and Sun technology enabling game developers to
create Java technology-based games with a mobile online multiplayer
gaming component.
The goal is to provide consumers to play online connected games with
people around the world using Nokia's advanced mobile online
multiplayer and community technology along with the Java programming
language.
"As the market for Java technology-based services in the mobile space
matures, the level of sophistication for services has increased
tremendously," said Chris Melissinos, chief gaming officer, Sun.
"Bringing mobile games online is one of the most important steps the
industry needs to take. Java technology has proven itself to be the
right platform for building a better mobile gaming user experience to
mobile games and this effort will take our joint customers' experience
to yet a higher level."
Based on Nokia's SNAP middleware technology, this new solution will be
available on the SolarisTM Operating System (Solaris OS), offering
high availability and performance required for multiplayer sessions.
Utilized in the N-Gage Arena, SNAP middleware technology enables a
cross-platform approach to mobile multiplayer gaming.
SNAP Mobile will be a part of a tools environment based on the JavaTM
2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2METM) Wireless Toolkit.
"Nokia sees that mobile online multiplayer games and mobility go hand
in hand, which is why we want to work with Sun to complement our N-Gage
offering and expand the mobile online multiplayer experience to the
wider Java technology gaming market," said Ilkka Raiskinen, senior vice
president, Games Business Unit, Nokia. "SNAP Mobile aims to provide the
tools for developers to easily create mobile online multiplayer games
and a straight forward way for network operators to launch mobile
online gaming communities."
