Sun Launches the Sun Fire V20z Server in Malaysia The Release Represents the First x86 Server from AMD Alliance
A recent article that appeared at The Star Online discusses the
Malaysian launch of the Sun FireTM V20z server, which is the first
hardware product to be released since Sun's alliance with Advanced
Micro Devices (AMD). The product features x86 dual processors capable
of running on the SolarisTM Operating System (Solaris OS) (x86
Platform Edition) or Linux.
The server is the first of a series of servers based on the AMD Opteron
32/64-bit x86 series chips, and is designed to facilitate the migration
from 32-bit to 64-bit computing. The article cites Sun Microsystems
Malaysia Sdn Bhd managing director Cheam Tat Inn as stating that later
models in this same range would appear later in the year.
Both AMD and Sun are reportedly collaborating to optimize the Solaris
OS for the AMD Opteron processor family. Both companies have also
stated their intent to collaborate with the Linux community to define
and promote a 64-bit UNIXR-Linux application binary interface.
The article states, "These computing platforms were seen as the next
generation forward from the currently popular 32-bit platforms, able to
access exponentially larger data sets and providing the computing power
to handle graphics and video-intensive applications."
The article also cites Cheam with stating that Linux-based volume
servers were gaining market share away from those running Microsoft's
Windows operating systems.
