As part of the Upgrade Advantage Program (UAP), Sun is offering its
customers new upgrade options designed to protect investments in Sun
FireTM server UltraSPARCR III processor-based midrange and high-end
servers. The program also offers affordable migration paths to Sun Fire
UltraSPARC IV technology.
As part of the promotion, customers can purchase a Sun Fire UltraSPARC
midrange and high-end server now, and gain the option of upgrading the
server to an UltraSPARC IVR processor at a later date. Eligible servers
include those Sun FireTM 4800, 6800, 12K and 15K servers purchased
between February 10, 2004, and June 30, 2004.
Trade-in allowances of up to 40 percent towards the purchase of
replacement UltraSPARC s400 Uniboards and Sun Fire 4800 or 6800
hardware upgrade kits are available through the promotion. Upgrades
must take place between July 1, 2004, and June 30, 2005. By upgrading
to UltraSPARC IV technology, customers benefit from added investment
protection without any slowdowns or downtime.
This recommended upgrade path lowers the cost of upgrading an
UltraSPARC III server to an UltraSPARC IV processor. Under the
agreement, the customer will receive the uniboards and required chassis
hardware including power supplies and fans when upgrading. The
UltraSPARC IV server system controllers, I/O, and expander boards are
not upgraded nor included in the hardware upgrade kits.
If a customer chooses to upgrade their UltraSPARC III system after June
3, 2005, then under the Upgrade Advantage Program, the customer has the
option of trading-in their Sun system at a later date and receiving
trade-in credit toward a replacement Sun system. Trade-in values are
based on the age of the system and the residual value at time of
trade-in. Hardware upgrade kits are not required to support UltraSPARC
s400 1.05GHz Uniboards in existing Sun Fire 12K or 15K servers.
