When Scott McNealy, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Sun, spoke at
COMDEX on Monday, November 17, 2003, he announced a strategic alliance
between Sun and AMD in which Sun will deliver new AMD Opteron
processor-based Sun systems, versions of the
Solaris Operating System (Solaris OS), Linux OS and the Java
platform. Sun and AMD will also develop future hardware and software
offerings.
Sun and China Standard Software Co. (CSSC) have reached an agreement to
establish Sun's Java Desktop System as the foundation for standard
desktop development and deployment in the People's Republic of China
(PRC). Sun will help the CSSC reach its goal of a nationwide standard
desktop software system.
Sun introduced three initiatives aimed to accelerate the worldwide
adoption of Java Card technology-based smart cards: Java Card S
Program, Java Card 2.2.1 Specification and Development Kit, and the
Java Card Protection Profile.
Sun Microsystems has entered into an agreement as part of the company's
intent to acquire the privately-held Waveset Technologies. The move is
designed to expand the capabilities of the Sun Java Enterprise
System by consolidating and automating the management of any entity across and between enterprises.
To demonstrate its leadership in high performance technical computing
(HPTC), Sun presented an array of partnerships, technologies and
a new grid computing strategy at the Supercomputing 2003 Conference.
Sun also demonstrated a Top 500-ranked supercomputer with the San Diego
Supercomputing Center (SDSC).
A team of cluster computing experts from the San Diego Supercomputer
Center (SDSC) assembled, installed and demonstrated real applications
on a 128-node Sun Fire V60x Compute Grid supercomputer in two hours
at the Supercomputing 2003 conference, the annual high performance
networking and computing show.
The Java Community Process has given unanimous approval to the
Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) 1.4 and Software
Development Kit (SDK). The new specification and its Compatibility
Test Suite (CTS) will be marketed under new license terms friendly to
non-profit and open source projects.
At the heart of the system Sun Microsystems has designed for branch
banking is the Sun Ray appliance and the Sun Java Branch
Controller for Retail Bank Branches. The stateless Sun Ray device
consolidates resources on the server and, with a minimum of client
administration or upgrades, enables access to existing applications and
resources on the network, using any of several platforms -- Solaris
Operating System (Solaris OS), Windows NT or other Java
technology-based solutions, even multimedia.
Sun and BEA Systems have agreed to port BEA WebLogic Platform 8.1 to
the Solaris Operating System (Solaris OS) (x86 Platform Edition).
The agreement will allow the two to offer Solaris OS low cost benefits
to the already scalable and performance-geared BEA WebLogic Platform
8.1.
At the recent SuperComputing conference, Sun announced that more than
50 percent of its customer sites highlighted on this year's Top 500
Supercomputers list are powered by the Sun Fire V60x Compute Grid
supercomputers. The Sun Fire 15K server is also featured on the list.
Sun plans to establish a $50 (US) million research and development
(R&D) facility in Taiwan to develop Linux software and Java
technology-based 3G mobile communications technology, according to a
report in the China Post.
Host Peter Galli of Ziff Davis eSeminar opened his hour-long interview
with Jonathan Schwartz, executive vice president, Sun Software Group,
and John Loiacono, VP, Operating Platforms Group, Sun, with a shot
across the bow: "Is the Sun Java Enterprise System a niche
product?" According to Schwartz, "This market isn't a niche. It's the
future."
Effective grid computing solutions focus on the whole environment,
ensuring optimal utilization of unused computing cycles and giving
special attention to the needs of critical applications that drive an
organization's business or research goals. Sun's new Infrastructure
Solution for Grid Computing combines the services, reference
architectures, Solaris Operating System (Solaris OS) and/or Linux
compute nodes, storage and software needed to set up a grid computing
environment faster, easier and at a lower cost than is possible with
competitive solutions.
Providing secure delivery of data, applications and services to the
growing user community requires a robust identity management
infrastructure. The improved ROI, reduced costs, higher levels of

Sun is offering its Sun Java Desktop System at a 50
percent discount to customers who trade in their existing Windows or
Linux desktop systems. The Sun solution includes a fully integrated
client environment based on open source and standards, including a GNOME
desktop environment, the StarOffice 7 Office Suite, Mozilla browser,
Evolution mail and calendar, Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition
(J2SE) and Linux.
Part of the Sun Java System for developers is the Sun Java
Studio. For software development made simple, the Sun Java Studio
offers integrated tools, SDKs, APIs, libraries and developer services.
The Sun Java Studio is for rapidly developing applications and Web
Services across multiple platforms and environments.
Sun is transitioning VERITAS Volume Manager 3.1.1 and 3.2 and their
associated media kits and licenses from its price list and replacing
both with VERITAS Volume Manager version 3.5. The last order date for
this change is February 13, 2004.
Sun Microsystems has completed an alliance with major retailers and
e-tailers including Amazon.com, Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, Frys,
Micro Center, Office Max, Office Depot and Staples just in time for
Christmas and to coincide with the release of the StarOffice 7
Office Suite. This puts the StarOffice productivity suite within reach
of millions of consumers worldwide who are seeking to buy an
affordable, comprehensive, compatible office productivity suite.
Sun is pushing forward its throughput computing strategy to cut the
cost and complexity of network computing throughout the industry. To
accomplish this, Sun is introducing new UltraSPARC processors
designed to maximize throughput. These new chip multithreading (CMT)
processors are capable of executing tens of threads simultaneously and
should offer tremendous increases in data processing.
AMD presents information about the capabilities of its Athlon 64 and
Athlon 64 FX processors, along with benchmark results for the Opteron
processor, which enables simultaneous 31- and 64-bit operations.

JavaPolis. The event offers 30 sessions over two days, covering topics
such as Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME), Web Services,

The IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference will offer a
tutorial on Project JXTA on January 8, 2004, geared toward developers

Factory configurable JNI 2 Gb PCI Single and Dual Port Fibre Channel
Host Bus Adapters (HBA) are now available from Sun with the Sun
StorEdge SAN Foundation Software (SFS) driver stack. In order to meet
the requirements of the End-to-End 2 Gb SAN Infrastructure offered by
Sun, these adapters are equipped with a 2 Gb fibre channel.
A new Universal Rackmount Conversion Kit is available for the Sun
StorEdge L25 and Sun StorEdge L100 Tape Libraries. With the new
kit, the tape libraries can be rackmounted in the Sun Rack 900
hardware and other 19-inch industry standard racks and Sun StorEdge
system 72-inch expansion cabinet.
Sun, Plumtree Software, Documentum and BEA Systems have announced the
industry's first open-source Web site for organizations to share
portlets developed according to the new Java Community Process
(JCP) Java Specification Request (JSR) 168 and Web Services for
Remote Portlets (WSRP) OASIS standards.
In a recent interview published on the OpenOffice.org Web site, Joerg
Heilig, Director of Software Engineering at Sun, answered questions
about the technical development of the OpenOffice.org and StarOffice
software code.
The Open Source Software Institute (OSSI) is releasing the first phase
of Project Leopard, the core component of its eGovernment Web Services
platform based on LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl/Python). Through
LAMP, powerful and scalable Web-based programs can be developed and
implemented in an open-source environment.
Sun's plans to introduce the Java Mobility Advantage Program to the
Asia Pacific region. The program is designed to increase Java
technology mobile content and foster the growth of the developer
community in Asia Pacific.
The Java technology Tutorial
includes a section entitled "Generating and Verifying Signatures,"
which provides step-by-step guidance for generating a digital signature
for data and for verifying that a signature is authentic. Developers
who wish to incorporate security functionality into their programs,
including cryptography services, will find this lesson useful.
Java Masters 2004 competition
invites university students from around the world to develop innovative
Java technology applications for entertainment and business using
professional developer tools made available by Sun and Siemens in
creating new functionalities for the Siemens M55, MC60 and SX1 mobile
phones. Start-up companies are invited as well to submit entries to the
Business Award (BIZ) competition.
Several recent white papers are available on the Sun Web site that
provide guidelines for designing wireless clients for enterprise
applications using the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME)
and the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE). The
guidelines in these papers are illustrated by the Java Smart Ticket
sample application.
SaskTel, a full-service communications company in Saskatchewan,
selected technologies from Sun and Kasenna to offer video-on-demand
services to SaskTel customers.
Greg Papadopoulos of Sun discusses the potenial of Wi-Fi such as
Wi-Fi-enabled phones. He states, "An open wireless network will spur
more innovations than a closed network."
The OSS through Java initiative is comprised of several industry
leaders whose collective resources are facilitating the development of
innovative OSS/BSS solutions and enabling the deployment and
integration of OSS components. The initiative includes companies such
as Sun Microsystems, BEA, IBM Business Consulting Services, Mahindra
British Telecom and Motorola.
Bell Mobility recently looked to Sun for an end-to-end
content delivery solution that would automate management of
relationships with content providers, administer content and the
downloading of content and manage customer relationships. Sun was able
to provide a complete content delivery ecosystem for maximum
flexibility and resource maximization.
After four years of development, Jamcracker is releasing Pivot Patch, a
fully integrated Identity Management software suite and the solution
that powers Jamcracker's managed service business. The new product is
designed to offer the Identity Management market ease of use and ease
of implementation.
