Bringing Research into the Java Technology Product Set November 12, 2003,
Volume 69, Issue 2
Dr. James Gosling, vice president, Sun Fellow and JavaTM technology
creator, will join Sun's Developer Platforms group as chief technology
officer. His goals are to bring the advances achieved by the Sun Labs
team into the commercial space.
Gosling was leading a Sun Labs research team working on advanced
designs for software developer tools, including refactoring methodology
and pursuing advanced technology research initiatives such as the
Jackpot project.
"Sun's developer tools and programs are essential elements to the
enduring success of Java technology, and an integral part of the Sun JavaTM
Enterprise System," said James Gosling. "Working with the Labs team
over the years, we've designed concepts for improving the development
cycle from end-to-end. I'm looking forward to bringing those ideas into
the product set and to sharing Sun's passion for innovation with our
customers and partners."
Sun's Developer Platforms and Tools
Project Rave focuses on corporate developers who need to be able to
implement multi-tier, distributed applications with reduced complexity
and enhanced productivity for speedy deployment.
Sun JavaTM Studio Enterprise development environment (formerly
SunTM ONE Studio) is used to create applications for the Sun JavaTM
Enterprise System (which was called Project Orion). Bundled in the
environment is the Java Studio Standard IDE, the Sun Portlet Builder, a
version of the Sun Java Enterprise System for development and testing
purposes, software maintenance and support, and "how-to" developer
support.
Sun Java Studio Standard provides an environment for creating Java
Web Services and n-tier JavaTM 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition
(J2EETM) applications. It is also tightly integrated with the Sun
JavaTM System Application Server 7 (formerly SunTM ONE Application
Server), providing one-button deployment from the IDE to expedite the
debugging and testing of applications. Sun Java Studio Standard 5
update 1 (formerly SunTM ONE Studio 5 update 1, Standard Edition), is
now integrated with a sophisticated application framework, based on the
Model-View-Controller (MVC) design principle and J2EE platform patterns.
Sun JavaTM Studio Compiler Collection provides powerful, comprehensive
language systems and tools for building, compiling and debugging C,
C++ and Fortran 32-bit and 64-bit applications on the SolarisTM Operating
System (Solaris OS) for the SPARCR processor-based and x86-based platforms.
"Since Java technology's creation, James has been instrumental in
delivering on a constant vision for Java technology as a powerful
language and platform for revolutionizing the developer experience,"
said Jonathan Schwartz, executive vice president of Sun software.
"James' unique contribution and legendary expertise will allow Sun to
continue to evolve the developer experience by engineering out
complexity, increasing productivity and driving toward the goal of 10
million Java technology developers."
