Sun Expands HP Away Program with More Providers and Coverage in Europe
Added Resources Make Migration Easy

Sun has expanded its Sun HP Away migration program by making it available in Europe and by adding six migration solution providers and two ISVs. The mission of the HP Away migration program is to help customers move from the EOL'd Alpha/Tru64 to the SolarisTM Operating System (Solaris OS).

The Migration Solution Providers added to the program who will provide customers with automated tools and professional services to assist in porting applications from Alpha/Tru64 to a Sun environment are:

  • Datamatics
  • EvolveWare
  • IrisLogic
  • Transoft
  • Treklogic
  • Relativity Technologies

ISVs Ulticom and Sysix, have joined the program, bringing their installed base and a commitment to work with Sun to migrate customers from Alpha/Tru64 to Sun.

"Once a customer selects a server platform, they don't typically move without a compelling reason," said Larry Singer, Sun's senior vice president, global market strategies. "Alpha/Tru64 customers, however, are being forced to move, and we're adding new resources to make a move to Sun easy. In a single quarter, we've validated our strategy by moving a significant number of HP customers onto Sun platforms, and we plan to build on this success."

Since the HP Away program launch in July 2003, over 50 customers have opted to migrate from HP's AlphaServer/Tru64 to Sun. Also prompting migration is the delay in shipment of the HP-UX11i v.3. HP customers can choose the Solaris OS with its industry leading functionality -- clustering, advanced file systems and dynamic partitioning. The Solaris OS offers compatibility between releases, a long-term roadmap and a predictable release cycle.

Sun is working with its Migration Solution Providers to provide automated migration tools and professional services to convert both industry standard and customized applications to the Solaris OS or a Linux environment.

"We're seeing concern in the telecommunications industry from customers running applications on Tru64 about HP's roadmap," said Osman Duman, Ulticom, VP Marketing. "Sun is giving them an alternative they know they can trust, and we're working through the HP Away migration program to ensure Ulticom applications are easily migrated to Sun."

Included in the program is a free two-day migration consultation workshop, designed to determine the cost and technical requirements involved in a migration. Customers that meet the determined requirements will also receive the following:

  • A two-week Alpha/Tru64 to Solaris OS migration assessment service for qualified customers

  • If the customer decides not to proceed with the Tru64 to Solaris OS migration, Sun absorbs the cost of the two-week migration assessment service

  • Sun will defer payment for the entire migration -- including Sun services, servers and software -- until completion of the engagement (not to exceed 90 days)

  • If customer decides to proceed, application porting is offered through Sun's professional services group, teamed with ISVs, and Sun's iForce centers

  • Financing and trade-in offers are available to simplify the financial transition to Sun
