Sun's services and technologies have been chosen by Shell for use as a secure network computing platform for Shell's new integrated home management solution: Shell HomeGenie. The Shell HomeGenie was designed and implemented by a collaboration between Sun and Shell, and is based on Sun JavaTM Enterprise System technologies. Through the solution, homeowners gain Web-based remote access to household systems and devices through an OSGi-based residential gateway that uses a broadband Internet connection.

"Shell is committed to providing its customers with innovative mobile services to help make life easier and more convenient," said Robin Gaeta, General Manager for Shell HomeGenie. "The combination of Sun's vision, consulting services and innovative technologies made Sun the best end-to-end IT solution for the Shell HomeGenie project."

Homeowners are able to gain remote access to the home from anywhere Internet access is available, including Web-enabled computers or mobile phones. Using the Shell HomeGenie Programmable Thermostat allows homeowners to control the temperature in their homes, while the Shell HomeGenie Power Switch offers the ability to program lights and appliances remotely. The Shell HomeGenie Wireless Camera gives users the ability to monitor select areas of their home with cameras and motion sensors.

This service delivery platform provided by Sun includes:

  • Software -- Sun Java Enterprise System software components

  • Hardware -- Sun FireTM V240 server, Sun FireTM V880 server and Sun FireTM V1280 server

  • Services -- Sun Services worked with Shell to architect and deploy the platform/solution as well as the technology pilots for the HomeGenie project

  • Storage -- Sun StorEdgeTM 3510 fibre channel array

"Sun's Java Enterprise System opens a whole new world in easy, cost-effective service delivery in highly scaled environments," said Jonathan Schwartz, executive vice president of Software at Sun. "Our vision is 'Anything of Value Connected to the Network.' Shell is realizing this vision by providing consumers a whole new way to interact with their home. This is just the beginning of an explosion of new services and connectivity that Sun will help lead over the next decade."
