Sun, Lucent Technologies Deliver iForce Solution for Enhanced Communications
Boosts Provider Revenues, Reduces User Communications Bottlenecks

Sun and Lucent Technologies chose the ITU Telecom World 2003 Conference as the venue to announce their latest collaboration, the iForceSM Solution for Enhanced Communications, a solution designed to help service providers boost revenue by increasing the operational efficiencies of enterprises while reducing communication bottlenecks for end users.

This solution works in conjunction with telephony systems to help deliver an extensive set of Internet Protocol (IP)-enhanced productivity and convenience features, such as Web voice-controlled, real-time conference call set-up, in which the system finds and contacts the participants whether they are using a standard phone, IP phone, mobile device or a personal computer.

"The iForce Solution for Enhanced Communications is a natural extension of Sun JavaTM Enterprise System, a pre-integrated foundation for the delivery of network services," said Phil Sasso, senior director of the telecommunications industry at Sun. "By adding the `glue' that interfaces with the many different kinds of voice networks that exist, Lucent has created exactly the kind of ubiquitous and intuitive capabilities that we believe are necessary to enable seamless mobility for enterprise workforces."

The versatile iForce Solution for Enhanced Communications can be configured as a hosted solution, in which a service provider maintains and manages the equipment and offers these services to its customers either individually, or as part of a bundle. It can also be located and managed at an enterprise, helping to seamlessly integrate with other applications that the company already provides to its users.

The iForce Solution for Enhanced Communications offers multiple benefits including:

  • A Unified Communications Portal for easy, any time, anywhere access and management of calls, messages, conference calls, contact lists and calendars, including the use of voice-controlled applications such as Speech Dialing, Speech Messaging, voice portal and speech-enabled Web Services

  • The ability to leverage existing and next-generation switch technology in both hosted and customer premise-based call control environments supporting both legacy and IP handsets

  • Increased employee productivity through the integration of desktop communication tools with voice and data capabilities

The iForce Solution for Enhanced Communications includes industry-leading technology from each company: The Lucent AnyPath Messaging System and the Lucent Enhanced Business Services (EBS) Multimedia Portal, which runs on Sun FireTM V440 servers and Sun StorEdgeTM 3310 SCSI arrays and comprises such JavaTM System software solutions as the portal server, portal server mobile access, directory server, messaging server, calendar server and instant messaging.

The EBS portal can enable next generation computer/telephony integration that leverages existing and new network elements to provide productivity-enhancing tools to enterprise users. The portal includes many features such as unified messaging, Web-based call management, wireless Internet portal access and PDA support. The AnyPath system helps enable subscribers to manage voice, text, video or photo messages through a wireline phone, a mobile phone, a PDA or a personal computer. This allows subscribers to access voice mail via the Web and Web-based services using their voice. [...read more...]
