Sun's Advantages in Chip Multithreading Technology
Sun Has All the Ingrediants to Make it Work, Says David Yen

David Yen, Sun executive VP of processor and network products, talked at a meeting in South Africa about Sun's advantages in chip multithreading (CMT) technology. In a report by Warwick Ashford, ITWeb, Yen stated, "From the processor design to the capable operating system, we have all the ingredients to make it work. Competitors are missing at least one of the pieces such as control of an operating system that is capable of handling multithreading."

The first CMT based chip will not be out until 2006. Yen said, "Niagra will be Sun's first chip based on true CMT technology. It will have eight processor cores, with each core capable of executing four software threads. So you will have one chip literally executing 32 threads."

With chip multithreading, processors maximize throughput -- the aggregate amount of work done. Throughput Computing is designed to offer customers significantly improved processing efficiency by allowing applications to run much faster. For more details on CMT:
