Microsoft Java Virtual Machine Support Date Extended

Sun has debuted a new comprehensive program for developers upgrading JavaTM technology applets and Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (MSJVM) based applications to the latest version of the JavaTM Runtime Environment (JRE). The Web site for the new developer program contains articles, upgrade guides, support forums and diagnostic tools that can speed up a developer's efforts as they upgrade their applications.

Sun and Microsoft recently agreed upon a new maintenance license where Microsoft will extend its support for Microsoft JVM software until September 30, 2004. The agreement is designed to give developers and enterprises more time to upgrade their current technologies during which Microsoft JVM software is still supported. The effort should ensure a smooth upgrade and distribution of Java technology worldwide when combined with Sun's other recently successful distribution programs.

To better achieve worldwide availability for its Java software on desktops, Sun has set up a series of complementary programs for OEMs, consumers and developers. The company also has distribution agreements with industry leaders including Apple, DELL, Gateway, HP, Samsung, Toshiba, and Tsinghua Tongfang. All of these intend to ship a current version of Java technology installed on their computers.
