Sun Trunking 1.3 Software
For Sun GigabitEthernet, SunFastEthernet and Sun Quad FastEthernet Adapters

Sun TrunkingTM 1.3 link aggregation software is currently available with support for the SolarisTM Operating Systems (Solaris OS) 7, 8 and 9 on SunTM GigabitEthernet, SunFastEthernetTM and Sun Quad FastEthernetTM adapters. Sun Trunking 1.3 software allows customers to aggregate up to four Sun GigabitEthernet ports or up to sixteen 10/100 Sun FastEthernet ports into a single virtual link (trunk).

New features include:

  • Bandwidth aggregation (bundled GigabitEthernet links and bundled FastEthernet links)

  • Load balancing between ports based on policy (round robin, MAC or IP address hashing)

  • Automatic Failure recovery

  • CLI Backward Compatibility

Sun Trunking 1.3 enables aggregation of multiple Gigabit Ethernet, Quad FastEthernet or FastEthernet links into one single virtual link for higher performance and resiliency. The software adds to the functionality included in Sun Trunking 1.2.1 by adding support to the:

  • Sun Gigabit Ethernet Network Interface Card (Part # X1150A): For high performance Category 5 UTP and PCI applications with full IEEE 802.3 compliance

  • Sun Gigabit Ethernet Network Interface Card (Part # X1151A): For high performance MMF fiber and PCI applications with full IEEE 802.3 compliance

  • Sun Dual FastEthernet and SCSI Network Interface Card

Continued support is included for:

  • Sun Quad FastEthernet PCI Card

  • Installed base of Sun GigabitEthernet/PCI Card 2.0 and Sun GigabitEthernet/Sbus Card 2.0

  • Installed base of Sun Quad FastEthernet/Sbus Card 2.0

The new software is designed for customers who need to add bandwidth and high availability to systems using Sun GigabitEthernet or Sun Quad FastEthernet hardware adapters on a single, logical port on the existing cable. The software operates between two Sun servers or between a Sun server and a trunking-capable switch.

Sun Trunking 1.3 aims to address the needs of companies who are facing insufficient network capacity as they see the number of users and applications on a network increase. The software enhances bandwidth and delivers the power demanded by many of today's technical and commercial applications, while still preserving investments in network technology. Customers can leverage existing infrastructure and add bandwidth and high at low cost.

The software offers bundled Gigabit Ethernet links to support Gigabit Ethernet Network Interface Cards (NICs) for bandwidth aggregation. This allows for "fat pipe" aggregation of four one Gbps ports. Load balancing based on policy is also a feature (round robin, MAC or IP address hashing). This allows traffic to be evenly distributed across the aggregated links.
