To help push forward the development of open standard software, including Linux, Sun has joined with the Open Source Development Lab (OSDL) to lend its expertise in the data center and carrier-grade markets. Through its membership with OSDL, a consortium of technology companies dedicated to accelerating the adoption of Linux, Sun will take part in the Carrier Grade Linux and Data Center Linux working groups. This participation will help advance the use of the Linux operating system and its functionality in the enterprise and telecommunications environments.

OSDL is committed to accelerating the growth and adoption of Linux in the enterprise. Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, joined OSDL as the first OSDL Fellow in June of 2003. The group is supported by a global consortium of IT industry leaders and is a non-profit organization. OSDL sponsors include Alcatel, Cisco, Computer Associates, Dell, Ericsson, Force Computers, Fujitsu, HP, Hitachi, IBM, Intel, Linuxcare, Miracle Linux Corporation, Mitsubishi Electric, MontaVista Software, NEC Corporation, Nokia, Red Hat, Sun Microsystems, SuSE, TimeSys, Toshiba, Transmeta Corporation, Ulticom, Unilever and VA Software.

Sun aims for its new strategic relationship with OSDL to be perceived as an important extension of its already sizable intellectual property offerings. Sun will bring a number of resources to OSDL, including a roster of technology solutions customized for the data center and carrier-grade markets as well as its network of industry partners.

"Sun has been a significant contributor to the open source movement for years," said Stuart Cohen, CEO of OSDL. "Their breadth of technical and marketplace expertise is a welcome addition to the Lab's membership and we look forward to their contributions to our Linux initiatives."

"Sun has been an instrumental figure within the open-source community, having contributed a wealth of resources and technology to leading open-source projects, including OpenOffice.org, GNOME.org, Mozilla.org, NetBeans.org, JXTA.org and the Grid Engine Project," said John Loiacono, vice president, operating platforms group, Sun. "As a new member of OSDL, Sun brings its unwavering commitment to open-standards and continuing innovation in open technologies such as the JavaTM technology platform."
