Sun and SuSE Linux have engaged in an alliance designed to push the
reach of JavaTM technology. The agreement will make SuSE a JavaTM 2
Platform, Standard Edition (J2SETM) source licensee, as well as a
distributor of the JavaTM Virtual Machine (JVMTM). Sun's part in the
agreement sees the company selling, shipping and providing full
customer support for SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 on Sun's x86
systems. (The terms "Java virtual machine" and "JVM" mean a virtual machine for the Java platform.)
Sun hopes the collaboration announcement further stresses its
commitment to offer customers choice, innovation and value through
application availability and Java technology everywhere. The company
continues to actively pursue a wide range of alliances with different
members of the Linux community in order to better tune and distribute
its latest version of the JVM with their Linux distributions. As part
of the partnership, SuSE will receive powerful Java technology-based
customer solutions for its platform.
"This agreement further demonstrates the accelerating momentum of Java
(technology) and Sun's support for the open community," said Jonathan
Schwartz, executive vice president, software, Sun. "Sun values SuSE's
expertise and welcomes them to the Java (technology) community and we
look forward to working with them to grow the global marketplace.
Through this collaboration and Sun's continued commitment to open
systems, customers benefit from greater choice and innovation."
Customers will be able to receive fully supported Java technology and
Linux solutions as a result of the joint offering. Sun will be
providing global services and support for SuSE Linux Enterprise Server
8 on Sun's x86 systems and will support SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8
on select third-party SuSE certified hardware. Sun will also support
customers in heterogeneous environments including SolarisTM Operating
System (Solaris OS) and Trusted SolarisTM software, the Solaris OS
(x86 Platform Edition), SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8, as well as
other Sun supported Linux offerings.
"SuSE continues to shake up the traditional IT world with open source
innovation as we expand our partner channels to provide customers true
business value and choice," said Richard Seibt, CEO, SuSE Linux.
"Corporate customers want alternatives. Under our new partnership with
Sun, we're delivering user-friendly, flexible solutions that will drive
significant business advantages for customers and open up new
opportunities for both Sun and SuSE."
