Sun's new Game Technologies Group plans to develop next-generation
technologies to allow game developers to do more with JavaTM
technology. The new group will be headed by Chris Melissinos. The
group will work on developing and delivering Java technology-based
solutions to the video games industry across client and server.
"As the online video game market expands, so do the hurdles and
complexities of building online services," said Chris Melissinos, chief
gaming officer, Sun. "Sun is in a unique position as we've been
developing massively connected environments for years, and we plan to
use that knowledge to further the capabilities of the gaming
community."
Sun plans to deliver Java technology-based solutions and tools that
leverage industry standards for next-generation online games,
simplifying the development process for multiple devices and the
integration of those devices into one game framework.
Sun plans to work with the open source community to build Java client
technologies that leverage industry standards and allow those devices
to communicate directly with Sun's game server architecture.
An update to Javagaming.org will be announced at the JavaOneSM
Conference 2003. There will be a new Video Game Summit at the
conference which will offer developer insight and game demos of Java
technology. The keynote presentation will be given on Tuesday the 10th
by Dr. Kevin Bradshaw, the founder of "Machines That Go Ping." There
will be case studies highlighting how companies use the JavaTM 2
Platform, Micro Edition (J2METM) for mobile gaming. An MIDP 2.0
overview will cover the benefits of the specification.
