In the three UNIXR server segments tracked by IDC, Sun is the leader in
unit shipments worldwide and tied for revenue. This result is based on
IDC's new server taxonomy-volume ($0-$25K), midrange enterprise
($25-$500K) and high-end enterprise (over $500K).
Sun posted the highest sequential marketshare gains (in terms of unit
shipments) of the top three UNIX server competitors -- including HP and
IBM. Helping achieve the gains are the new servers from Sun such as the
Sun FireTM V120 system and the Sun FireTM
V1280 servers, which are part of a comprehensive systems portfolio.
Sun's worldwide UNIX server unit marketshare is higher than the top
three competitors (HP, IBM, Dell) combined.
Sun gained UNIX system revenue and unit shipment market share in both the
U.S. and APAC (Asia/Pacific except Japan), on a sequential quarter
basis, compared with Q402.
Sun regained the top position in U.S. UNIX server revenues after a
sequential gain of 13 points in marketshare at the expense of the
previous leader.
"After a dynamic year, momentum is shifting in favor of Sun," said Larry
Singer, Sun's vice president, global information strategy office. "Our
renewed investments in lowering customers' cost and complexity are
paying off. Over the past few months, we've responded to customer
requests by delivering low cost solutions that pack enterprise-class
functionality and reliability, and we're poised to continue to deliver
what the customers need."
A recent Gartner Dataquest report confirms Sun's market dominance. Gartner's
figures show Sun as the leader in the UNIX+Linux market segment, with a
24.2 percent marketshare in units shipped and a 29.5 percent marketshare in
revenues.
