In the case of disaster, it is vital to have backups of your
mission-critical data safely offsite. The process of making backups can
be tedious, especially for large amounts of data. VERITAS NetBackup
Vault automates the process of backup duplication and offsite
media management. VERITAS NetBackup Vault is an integrated option for
VERITAS NetBackup DataCenter. Some of the key features of VERITAS
NetBackup Vault are its ability to perform inline tape duplication
during the backup. Initial backups can then be stored, or staged, on a
disk storage device and automatically duplicated to tape storage
devices following the backup.
With VERITAS NetBackup Vault, users can set up policies to control
which backups are duplicated and when tapes will be shipped to the
offsite vault and back. You have the option of keeping one copy onsite
and another offsite, enabling routine restore requests to be done without
recalling an offsite copy from the vault.
Inline Tape Duplication
One of the key flexible features of NetBackup Vault is ability to
perform inline tape duplication during the backup. Inline duplication
eliminates the need for separate duplication steps following the
backup. This feature is especially useful for large data center
environments with limited backup windows.
A combination of inline and post-process duplication methods can also
be used. The post-process duplication copies tapes after a backup is
complete and requires more time but fewer hardware resources.
Post-process duplication can be performed over the network from one
NetBackup media server to another if resources are limited or to
facilitate electronic vaulting.
At least two tape drives are required to duplicate tape backups.
Duplication can also be performed between different tape technologies,
if desired. Policies can limit duplication to just the portion of data
that is considered most critical to the business, and post-process
duplication policies can be designed to de-multiplex and consolidate
critical data on selected tapes to help optimize recovery times.
Original backups can be sent offsite or the duplicate can be sent.
NetBackup Vault gives you the flexibility to combine both originals and
duplicates. NetBackup Vault gives you the flexibility to define different
retention periods for each backup copy, making it easy to match your
backup procedures to your business requirements.
Leverage the Advantages of Disk and Tape
With NetBackup Vault, the initial backup can be stored, or staged, on a
disk storage device and then automatically duplicated to tape storage
devices after the backup. Expiration times can be set to reduce the
amount of disk capacity needed, depending on the unique data retention
requirements for each business. The entire process can be automated.
Another efficient feature of NetBackup Vault is the automation of
ejecting tapes so they can be easily collected. Tape ejection is
handled automatically, based on preset policies that determine which
tapes should be sent offsite each day. NetBackup Vault takes full
advantage of a robotic tape library's cartridge access port (CAP) and
places the tapes to be vaulted in this holding area so tape-handling
personnel can simply empty the tapes from the CAP and box them up for
shipment.
NetBackup Vault can also track the location of every tape by vault and
slot number in the NetBackup database, as well as when each tape is set
to expire, eliminating the need for spreadsheets and time-consuming
data entry. It can also make a pick list report, documenting all the
tapes that are transferred offsite for a particular day.
NetBackup Vault can produce a series of essential reports such as vault
inventory, media contents, expired media and summary reports for use in
recovery situations. These reports help communicate status between
onsite and offsite locations, and provide an important way to
coordinate directives with offsite data storage vendors.
NetBackup Vault automatically assigns offsite slot identifiers for use
by the offsite vendor according to a numerical slot range allocation.
Reports are generated manually or automatically, and results can be
output in print, email, or file formats, as well as electronic report
formats supported by Iron Mountain's SecureBase or MediaLink
applications.
VERITAS NetBackup Vault Quick List of Features and Benefits
- Flexible Duplication Methods -- Store backup data both onsite and
offsite by performing duplication simultaneously with the primary
backup or at the conclusion of backup operations, in any combination or
quantity.
- Offsite Media Tracking -- Onsite and offsite tape inventories are
recorded and tracked in the NetBackup database.
- Detailed Vault Reporting -- Daily pick list reports
show which tapes need to be shipped offsite or returned onsite, making
it easy to coordinate with offsite personnel and data storage vendors.
- Low Maintenance -- Tapes to be sent offsite are automatically ejected
each day for tape-handling personnel to quickly package and ship.
- Support for the SolarisTM Operating Sytem (Solaris OS), Red Hat
Linux, IBM AIX, HP-UX, SGI IRIX, Compaq Tru64 UNIXR, or Microsoft
