Automate the Recovery Process with VERITAS Bare Metal Restore for VERITAS NetBackup
Execute Multiple Server Restores

VERITAS Bare Metal Restore automates and streamlines the server recovery process, making it unnecessary to manually reinstall operating systems or configure hardware. Complete restoration of a server can be done with a single command in a fraction of the time without extensive training or tedious administration. Server restores will be faster, easier and more successful, getting your business back online as soon as possible.

As the recovery process becomes more complex and the number of servers grows, error can be introduced. Fully automated system recovery provided by VERITAS Bare Metal Restore can be done with very little user intervention, eliminating the need for highly-skilled personnel to manually reinstall operating systems and configure hardware prior to restoring data.

VERITAS Bare Metal Restore provides the following benefits:

  • Accelerated server restores decrease downtime

  • Details about the disk configuration and TCP/IP settings are automatically recorded and updated during every scheduled backup, ensuring recovery to the precise pre-failure state of all system configurations

  • Execute multiple server restores in parallel to accomplish mass-recovery operations

  • All Bare Metal Restore processes are seamlessly integrated with existing VERITAS NetBackup installations to synchronize operations and simplify administration

VERITAS Bare Metal Restore provides you with one solution for many platforms. Recover IBM AIX, HP-UX, SolarisTM Operating System (Solaris OS), Microsoft Windows NT and Windows 2000 systems using the same basic procedure.

Bare Metal Restore works together with NetBackup DataCenter or NetBackup BusinesServer (version 3.4 or later is required). Your clients are still backed up to NetBackup servers as before, but an additional procedure is automatically executed before every scheduled backup to record the current state of the machine configuration, including the disk layouts and TCP/IP configuration. If changes are made to a machine's configuration, these changes are automatically captured and recorded at the next scheduled backup without any user intervention.

Restore commands can be issued via the command line on the Bare Metal Restore server or by using a simple, browser-based interface. Bare Metal Restore immediately retrieves the client's configuration data, uses that data to create a customized client recovery procedure and then directs the client to the appropriate boot images and file systems over the network.

The client then boots from a prepared boot server and starts running the customized boot procedure, which performs the following tasks:

  • Mounts the necessary file systems from the file server

  • Configures disks, logical volumes, file systems, etc.

  • Issues commands to NetBackup to restore files using a NetBackup server, including the operating system, configuration data, applications and user files

After these tasks are complete, the client configures the boot record and configuration database, reboots itself and comes back up.

If no machine configuration changes are needed, no manual intervention is required other than the initial network boot.
