Calling on the services of Oracle, Sun Microsystems and Verio, TradingSports created the world's first person-to-person (P2P) sports betting exchange that allows gamblers worldwide to place bets with one another online through either local bookmakers or sports Web sites.

A wholly owned NTT Communications Corp. subsidiary, Verio worked with Sun to develop the TradingSports Web site. Based on the projected transaction load, Verio recommended using two Sun FireTM V880 servers configured in an active/active cluster solution with Oracle9i Real Application Clusters (RAC). The network environment can burst from 8 MB to 100 MB in response to demand peaks. Core Web servers are NetraTM t1 AC200 servers running AEOS specialist software developed by Sherwood International and designed to support large numbers of concurrent users. The SolarisTM 8 Operating System (Solaris OS) provides the system foundation.

TradingSports CTO Graham Twaddle commented that, "As we wanted a reliable, fully fault tolerant system capable of running uninterrupted, 24x7, we decided to outsource the system hosting and management to Verio. With its Global Tier One IP network, Verio provides the web hosting, as well as a fully managed service for parts of the system, including the web servers and monitoring for hardware failures, network failures, cache failures, and performing back-ups. We also drew on Verios services for network design, cache architecture and firewall architecture. The system is located in Verios UK data center in Docklands, which offers tier 1 redundant facilities with the highest levels of monitoring and support, as well as stringent security features and we can access the system remotely via a VPN."

According to Verio Europe President Moos Bulder, "This is one of the first implementations of an active/active Sun cluster with Oracle 9i/RAC in the UK. Because TradingSports needs to run continuously, 24x7, we recommended the V880 active/active cluster solution for its sheer performance, scalability and flexibility. In addition, the Oracle 9i/RAC solution enables superior scalability and reliability, by ensuring that applications can fail over and, within seconds, run at full speed."

Benchmark testing by TradingSports determined that the site was capable of supporting 100,000 simultaneous users placing bets at the rate of 150 per second. Projected resulting revenue at this rate exceeded 19 million pounds per hour, which TradingSports plans to more than double soon.
