New Jersey Opens a Single Window onto the Garden State
My New Jersey Portal Runs on the Sun ONE Portal Server

My New Jersey is an e-government portal built on the SunTM ONE Portal Server software (formerly iPlanetTM Portal Server) that gives New Jersey residents single-sign-on access to the services they require, such as renewing a vehicle registration, getting a fishing license, filing taxes online, searching a jobs database or getting step-by-step instruction on how to start a business. The portal even includes Hangout NJ, a page for young people that provides information on state history and government.

My New Jersey users can personalize their portal and access it anywhere, anytime. Instead of maintaining separate portals, each requiring a learning curve, for the numerous constituencies in the state, system administrators can now manage a single platform, adding or eliminating services as necessary, at a reduced cost.

The portal uses policy-based access control that gives appropriate access rights to four different constituency groups according to a rich identity-management structure.

Among the business-related services available on the portal are business filing and registration, employer quarterly reports, status report lookups, business name availability and registration, and uniform commercial code search facilities. Local governments have secure remote access to various online systems, documents and legacy applications through the portal, and government employees can check email and access documents, directories and applications over a virtual private network that does not require client-side software.

"State and Federal E-Government in the United States," a 2002 study conducted by Brown University, rated My New Jersey second in the nation on the basis of such features as contact information, publications, databases, privacy and security policies, executable services, links, foreign language access and the absence of advertising and fees.

"The state of New Jersey's portal initiative is a great example of how our customers can fully realize the power of portal computing by extending services beyond internal users," says Stephen Pelletier, vice president of network identity, communications and portal products for Sun Microsystems. "Many of our customers require distributed users, whether they are employees or constituents, to have secure access to the data and services they need--wherever they reside." [...read more...]
